Reporting directly to the Board Chair, the Executive Director will work side by side with the WCK Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan and annual objectives to accomplish our mission, carrying direct responsibility for leadership of all staff, public communications, financial accountability in keeping with an approved budget, and supporting all Board directed efforts of fundraising.

Leadership and Strategy

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan and carry out annual objectives that align with and meet WCK’s vision and mission.
  • Provide communications to inform the Board of Directors of organizational activities, priorities and internal / external issues.
  • Identify the required resources to achieve the goals and objectives of the strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors in matters of policy and organizational development.
  • Support the Board Chair in casting the big vision and mission of WCK to the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain current personal education and understanding of the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment on children and families and make presentations to the Board and the public for their fuller understanding of our mission.

Human Resources

  • Oversee the hiring and onboarding of staff members.
  • Prepare staff contracts, payroll paperwork and onboarding documents.
  • Support the Volunteer Coordinator in developing the volunteer program.
  • Ensures regular performance evaluations are in place and conducted with staff.
  • Approve Health benefits, paid time off, staff team building and wellness programs.
  • Develop HR policies for Board approval to create and uphold the unique workplace culture at WCK.

Fundraising and Development

  • Work alongside the WCK Staff team and Board to create and implement a short and long-term strategy for accomplishing and resourcing our future mission.
  • Work alongside the Development Manager to identify opportunities for generating positive revenue from individual donors, corporations and foundations.
  • Support campaign and donor communications.
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of creative fundraising events.
  • Cultivate relationships with the funding community of Vancouver and surrounding areas.
  • Work alongside Board Members to make the ask’ for support from major donors.
  • Support grant applications with financial reporting and budgets
  • Donor appreciation and stewardship
  • Speak at fundraising and stewardship events to highlight WCK's mission and vision.
  • Maintain open communication and positive working relationships with ongoing donors (SVP, Nicola Wealth)

Community Engagement and Collaboration :

  • Provide positive leadership within the childhood cancer community locally in BC and nationally.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders in the community (e.g. BCCH, Surrey School, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Balding for Dollars, CCFS, Gaby Davis Foundation, Camp Goodtimes / CCS).
  • Represent WCK as the spokesperson wherever needed, including community and public events, media events, government meetings, etc .
  • Demonstrate our value of listening and asking by prioritizing input using a variety of consultation methods (focus groups, conversations, etc.

with those with lived experience of childhood cancer.

Develop and implement MOUs and clear expectations for outside partnerships (Surrey Schools, SVP).

Operations

  • Develop and implement operational plans and teams to meet strategic goals and objectives in collaboration with the staff team.
  • Continually evaluate and adjust operational plans in keeping with local and provincial requirements and standards while maintaining our strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and ongoing support to the staff team.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of WCK program plans.
  • Ensure appropriate evaluation strategies, including measures of program efficacy, community input (e.g. focus groups, workshop evaluations, attendance statistics), and outcome measures are in place.
  • Provide resources to the staff team to use process and technology to increase efficiency and productivity (ClickUp, Airtable, Keela).
  • Develop a strategic plan with the Marketing and Communications Teams.
  • Oversee and support ongoing communications and marketing initiatives.
  • Oversee, support and evaluate the various program committees to ensure objectives are being met.
  • Regular check-ins with direct reports.
  • Provide troubleshooting and coaching to support program challenges.
  • Host weekly team meetings.

Finances

  • Lead the Development Team and Program Staff to prepare and manage the annual operating budget.
  • Support the Board of Directors in securing funding for the operation and future development of WCK.
  • Ensure adherence to the approved annual budget.
  • Oversee the tracking of annual revenue and expenditures.

QUALIFICATIONS : Education

Education

A relevant degree (MBA, MA) supplemented by non-profit experience or a comparable combination of education, training and experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of recent related senior management experience, preferably with some experience in a health care related environment.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills in fiscal management, strategic planning and delivery, program and staff and volunteer development.
  • Preparing and / or overseeing an annual operating budget of $2+ million, including responsibility for expenditures, fundraising and operational management.
  • Reporting to a Board of Directors in a direct or acting capacity in a health care or non-profit society.
  • Dealing directly with health care, government and public sector officials, partners and stakeholders.
  • Leading, managing, mentoring and developing staff and volunteers.
  • Fundraising experience is preferred.
  • Media experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proven effective leadership and team building skills in a non-profit environment including the ability to coach, mentor, guide, support, motivate, inspire and delegate.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and operate within a transparent and collaborative environment.
  • Excellent Board relations skills including demonstrated ability to guide, direct and educate Board members as required.
  • Sound knowledge of the cornerstones of a non-profit environment including fundraising, staff and volunteer development, program development and delivery, marketing and communications and financial management.
  • Knowledge of strategic and operational planning
  • Effective change agent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated practice to seek first to understand, then to be understood.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a variety of situations including sensitive and emotional circumstances.
  • Proven ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities and make decisions.
  • Commitment and ability to build a positive and effective organizational culture.
  • Demonstrated strategic and critical thinking, solution focused, constructive problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, take initiative, make appropriate decisions and communicate required actions effectively.
  • Demonstrated a high degree of emotional intelligence including self-awareness, self regulation, motivation, empathy, integrity, compassion, respect and polished social skills.
  • Polished presentation skills and the ability to serve as a spokesperson and advocate.
  • Forward and strategic thinker and the ability to execute and deliver on strategic objectives.
  • Strong administrative, management and financial oversight skills.

Benefits

Salary range : $90,000 to $105,000

Vacation : 20 days (4 weeks)

Scheduled Weekly Hours : 32 (4-day work week)

Work format : Hybrid
