RESPONSIBILITIES

Thompson Rivers University is seeking a sessional faculty member who will teach one or two sections of EDUC5990 : Special Topics in Education.

Calendar Description : Special topics courses are offered on a temporary basis and are not part of the regular course offerings.

This course utilizes the special expertise of a faculty member or a visiting professor to go beyond the usual curriculum and enrich the program of study.

Course Description : Neuroscience in Secondary Education

Students investigate at an introductory level the application of current neuroscientific findings to teaching, learning, and development during the adolescent years.

Basic brain structures, functions, and brain plasticity are examined in relation to the developing brain and body during adolescence.

Of key importance is the critical evaluation of neuroscientific research and its ethical application to educational policy and practice.

Basic statistics and a review of research methods will be covered. Students explore commercial products and programs common in educational settings, as well as the future use of computer-brain interfaces.

Interventions from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives will be considered.

QUALIFICATIONS

QUALIFICATIONS *

  • PhD or EdD is required, ABD will be considered.
  • A minimum of one (1) degree in education is required.
  • Expertise in K-12 education is required.
  • Three (3) years of full time or equivalent hours teaching in K-12 settings is required.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstration of subject matter expertise is required.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, teamwork and communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated experience in integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods (TRC CA 62) required.
  • Proven skills in building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect (TRC CA 63) required.

Teaching excellence, including developing culturally appropriate curricula (TRC CA 10) required.
