ERM is seeking a Principal Consultant to join our Canada team with a focus on social performance, political / country risk, stakeholder engagement, security / human rights, crisis management and / or strategic communications .
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and Project Management expertise with regard to one or more of these practice areas.
They will be responsive and adaptable to rapidly evolving legal, regulatory and social expectations to provide project management and senior technical expertise at every potential stage of major projects within Canada and globally, advising clients to achieve their strategic goals and growth objectives in partnership with ERM.
They will serve as a representative of the company and play a significant role in building the business and winning new projects, with the ability to build strong and enduring client and internal relationships.
Industry experience, particularly in mining and internationally, is essential to this role. This is a full-time, permanent position based out of our Toronto office with the flexibility of a hybrid work model.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provide technical expertise, leadership and project management for a wide variety of projects related to mining, oil and gas, power, infrastructure, renewables and other sectors.
- Expected project delivery activities may relate to, at a high-level, political, social and security risk advisory and management;
- conducting risk and impact assessments; crisis management support; social and human rights due diligence; stakeholder identification and engagement support;
- policy and procedure development; organizational strategy and communications support; strategic client advisory and capacity building;
and reporting writing and reviewing.
- Work on multiple projects and serve as project manager to ensure deliverables achieve client expectations for scope, budget, schedule, and quality.
- Contribute towards business development in capital projects delivery and mergers and acquisitions service areas. Identify and develop new opportunities, prepare effective technical proposals, including scopes and cost estimates, and take an active leadership role in developing client relationships to support new and repeat business.
- Lead, manage performance, hire, retain and mentor junior- and mid-level consulting staff to support development of their skillsets including technical skills, project experience, and general consulting and decision-making skills.
- Work with other global ERM resources to deepen relationships with ERM key clients to expand ERM’s profile and market share through a combination of excellence in technical delivery and business development support.
- Actively contribute to ERM’s technical communities and collaborate with other global practitioners to execute projects.
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED SKILLS :
General
Post-secondary degree in engineering, economics, political science, resource management, public policy or a similar degree.
Master’s degree (or higher) is an asset.
8+ years of relevant experience in progressively senior roles including project management and oversight of team-based projects.
Previous consulting experience is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience working in the mining and / or related sectors, and an understanding of key drivers within the industry.
- Previous international work experience, or working on complex issues with an international scope.
- Fluency in English is required. Working ability (speaking and writing) in other languages (especially French or Spanish) is an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and project management approaches / tools. A Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong leadership and teambuilding skills with the ability to coach and mentor collaborative teams and demonstrate ERM values.
- Ability to present information to clients, stakeholders, communities, and colleagues in a concise and persuasive manner.
- Business acumen to understand business risk and challenges and recognize commercial opportunities.
- Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols.
- Willing and able to travel domestically and, if required, internationally.
