Position Overview

Our Client, a full-service real estate development company, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join their Real Estate Development team as a Director of Development and Planning.

This role is a strategic leadership position responsible for initiating, driving and overseeing all aspects of real estate development and planning throughout the organization.

The successful candidate will play a key role in driving growth, managing projects, optimizing processes, and enhancing efficiencies in the organization's real estate development practices.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic plans related to real estate development and planning to align with the company's long-term goals and objectives.
  • Analyze market trends, assess risks, and identify opportunities for new development projects in various sectors.
  • Collaborate with the team to establish development strategies and make informed decisions to stay competitive in the market.
  • Oversee the entire real estate development process, from site identification and acquisition to project completion and delivery.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams, including architects, contractors, engineers, and consultants, to ensure successful execution of development projects.
  • Monitor project timelines, budgets, and quality standards to ensure projects are delivered within scope and meet or exceed stakeholder expectations.
  • Direct financial analysis, feasibility studies, and due diligence for potential development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to secure project financing, negotiate loan terms, and manage project budgets throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Implement financial controls and risk management strategies to ensure the financial success and profitability of development projects.
  • Stay up-to-date with local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and zoning requirements related to real estate development.
  • Ensure compliance with all governmental and environmental regulations throughout the development process.
  • Address any issues related to permits, entitlements, zoning, and other regulatory matters in collaboration with legal and government affairs teams.
  • Provide strong leadership and guidance to the development and planning teams, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop team members to enhance their skills and expertise.
  • Encourage collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the team.
  • Represent the company in relationships with key stakeholders, including landowners, investors, public officials, and community groups.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with external partners and stakeholders to facilitate the execution of development projects.
  • Ensure clear and timely communication with stakeholders to manage expectations and address any concerns.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in real estate, urban planning, business administration, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in real estate development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering large-scale real estate development projects on time and within budget.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience in financial analysis, feasibility studies, and project financing.
  • In-depth knowledge of land use planning, zoning regulations, and environmental requirements.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to think strategically, make critical decisions, and solve complex problems.
  • Creates drive and takes initiative within the team and for projects.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Please note that at present, legal eligibility to work in Canada is a prerequisite for this role.
