Department / Unit Summary :
4J Surgical Spine is a 16 bed unit that provides acute care to patients before and after spinal surgery.
We are the regional service for spine specific interventions, serving most commonly Mississauga, Etobicoke, Brampton, Oakville, Georgetown, Milton and Orangeville.
4J Surgical Spine Unit is supported by an inter-disciplinary team of RNs and RPNs, CQCL, Charge Nurses, Physician Assistants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, OTA / PTA, Speech Language Pathologists, Discharge Planners, Dieticians, Pharmacists, 7 Neurosurgeons and 2 Orthopedic surgeons.
The team provides exceptional, patient-centred care in a collaborative and integrated manner. As a part of an academic centre, our team participates in ongoing research, quality improvement and professional development initiatives.
Position Summary :
- Responsible for the delivery of patient-centred nursing service to pre-operative and post-operative surgical patients, such as IV therapy, pain management, tracheostomy care, skin and wound prevention and care.
- Accountable for nursing assessment, care plan development, goal-oriented interventions, patient & family education and emotional support, evaluation and discharge planning.
- Uses sound clinical decision-making skills to make timely professional decisions and to evaluate the outcomes of care.
- Welcomes opportunities to serve as a preceptor, coach or partner to students and new staff.
- Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Participates in program planning, continuous quality improvement and evaluation.
Key Qualifications :
- Previous surgical experience or a keen interest in Neurosciences an asset.
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario is required.
- Current BCLS is required.
- Self-directed professional, able to work effectively and collaboratively in a high performance inter-professional team.
- Effective interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
- Neuroscience Nursing Certificate an asset, or commitment to complete within one year of hire.
- A positive work and attendance record is essential.
