As a Paralegal, you will play a pivotal role in our legal operations, driving efficiency and contributing significantly to our legal team's effectiveness.

Your responsibilities will encompass a wide array of legal tasks, ensuring regulatory compliance and providing invaluable support to our attorneys.

As an integral part of our dynamic legal team, Paralegals are entrusted with various legal duties essential to our practice.

Strong communication skills, a client-focused approach, and a thorough grasp of legal processes are vital for success in this role.

Effective multitasking, organizational prowess, and excellent interpersonal skills are also critical attributes needed to excel as a Paralegal.

Key Responsibilities

Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) Expertise :

  • Lead the preparation and presentation of cases before the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB), ensuring compliance with the Residential Tenancy Act and Rental Fairness Act.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of landlord-tenant disputes, advising clients on legal strategies, and negotiating settlements where possible.
  • Stay abreast of legislative changes and case law affecting LTB matters.

Small Claims Court Litigation :

  • Manage the entire litigation process in Small Claims Court, from drafting pleadings to representing clients in trials and settlement conferences.
  • Provide expert guidance on the potential for alternative dispute resolution and negotiate settlements to achieve favorable outcomes for clients.
  • Collaborate with legal assistants to ensure accurate and organized documentation throughout the litigation process.

Human Rights Legislation :

  • Apply a nuanced understanding of the Ontario Human Rights Code to cases involving discrimination, ensuring that clients are well-represented in human rights matters.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into alleged human rights violations and develop robust legal strategies to protect clients' interests.

Fire Protection and Prevention Act :

  • Integrate knowledge of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act into property-related litigation cases, particularly those involving fire safety compliance and disputes.
  • Collaborate with experts and consultants to gather technical information and evidence related to fire safety regulations.

Ontario Building Code :

  • Utilize comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code to address disputes related to property standards, construction defects, and building code violations.
  • Advise clients on compliance with building code regulations and represent them in litigation involving these matters.

Legal Research and Analysis :

  • Conduct in-depth legal research to support litigation strategies and stay current on developments in property law, human rights law, and related fields.
  • Analyze and interpret complex legal issues, providing clear and concise guidance to clients and colleagues.

Client Management :

  • Foster strong client relationships by providing regular updates, managing expectations, and ensuring clear communication throughout the litigation process.
  • Collaborate with clients to develop case strategies aligned with their objectives and priorities.

Team Leadership :

  • Mentor and guide junior paralegals and legal assistants, sharing knowledge and fostering professional development within the team.
  • Collaborate with other legal professionals within the firm to ensure cohesive and effective representation.

Qualifications and Licenses :

  • Litigation Experience : 3-5 years of hands-on litigation experience, preferably in property-related matters.
  • Educational Background : Paralegal diploma or equivalent legal education from a recognized institution.
  • Paralegal License : Must hold a valid paralegal license from the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Communication Skills : Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Analytical and Research Skills : Developing analytical and research skills to contribute effectively to legal strategies.
  • Adaptability : Ability to adapt to evolving legal landscapes and learn new areas of law.
