This is a full-time permanent position, based in Yellowknife.
Your role
We are looking for a producer of video to join CBC North’s original video development team. If that's you, you are known for your creative storytelling skills, your journalistic rigour and your ability to lead and develop teams.
You will be assigning, developing and vetting content from reporters working in the NWT and Yukon. You can effectively communicate story expectations and direction.
You have the ability to turn around contextual pieces in a breaking news environment under tight deadlines, and the ability to plan ahead so your team can also tackle in-depth and investigative stories.
In this role you will oversee the daily creation of the Northbeat supper-hour news show and will also have key responsibility implementing a digital-first video strategy.
You will also oversee and be central to developing content and workflow for the upcoming launch of a FAST TV streaming channel for the North.
You are an experienced and strong editorial leader who isn’t afraid to experiment and champion new ways of doing things.
You have very strong story development skills and you are a leader focused on the audience and what they need.
Innovation and creativity have to be in your DNA. You are open to new video storytelling treatments that will reach an audience that doesn’t consume news in traditional ways.
You are 100% invested in ensuring our journalism reaches as many people as possible on all of CBC’s on-demand, social and video platforms.
You are connected to, or have an understanding of, indigenous communities and their way of life and are passionate about finding original or underreported stories about those communities.

Proven judgment and experience in applying ethics and journalistic standards are required so your work fits within CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Key Tasks :
- Directs the team and establishes the editorial plan for the show and for the streaming channel each day.
- Works with the digital Senior Producer to maximize digital first strategy.
- Works with the assigning producers to allocate resources for video and other platforms.
- Manages the story development process and scheduling (in collaboration with the executive producer) and works with host to refine focus, angles, and structure.
- Helps develop the pitching and story creation skills of VJs reporters and videographers.
- Writes, vets, edits & reviews scripts, stories and q lines for the show as necessary.
- Works with the host to support best delivery and performance.
- Communicates with producers across platforms.
- Looks forward and anticipates the needs and direction of the program and streaming channel.
- Determines the look, feel, style, pace, lineup and format of the program against established criteria and values.
- Helps guide and support staff through change.
- Supports team development and ongoing staff feedback.
- Has daily responsibility for the journalism on the program and on the streaming channel.
- May perform all or part of the functions or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.
- Develops program, online and social media content including writing, researching and / or editing (text, graphics, video) as required.
We are looking for a candidate with the following :
- A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from university or college, plus 5 years of practical and relevant experience in journalism, including interviewing and writing for broadcast.
- Demonstrated experience leading a team or unit.
- Demonstrated experience in video story development across a range of formats.
- Demonstrated experience in providing feedback.
- Demonstrated experience with journalism ethics, vetting & fact checking the work of others and identifying legal implications of journalism.
- A keen interest and ongoing expertise in news and current events.
- An ability to work effectively to multiple deadlines.
- Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal and communication skills.
- An ability to work overtime as required.
- A strong sense of creativity, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the accuracy and quality of work.
- Innovative with programming and ideas.
- Curiosity, critical thinking and an ability to work effectively in a high pressure environment and under tight, daily deadlines.
- Ability to re-imagine daily news - including tone, format, story choice and visual elements.
- Broad knowledge of social media, other news media and digital platform storytelling.
- Demonstrated creativity in producing video content for digital and broadcast.
- Ability to solve problems quickly, independently and in-group discussions while living the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.
- Proven ability to direct the work of others.
