Commercial Insurance Advisor
Reporting to the Director, Insurance Services, the successful candidate will have experience working in Commercial Lines Insurance in a sales and / or service capacity, ideally within the Public Sector.
The candidate must have strength in providing exceptional service to an existing book of business with a detail-oriented approach while having the ability to deliver on members’ needs in a broader context.
The candidate should have experience with managing and handling competing deadlines; all while being able to maintain a positive can do attitude and oversee issues through successful resolution.
Know-How
Practical / Technical Knowledge
- An undergraduate degree or diploma in business, economics or related discipline
- Minimum 3 years experience in commercial lines insurance at an Account Executive level or higher
- Level 2 Alberta General Insurance Agents License is required
- CIP is considered an asset
- Experience with a wide variety of organizations, including municipalities, non-profit organizations, recreational facilities, governmental organizations, and mixed commercial is preferred.

- Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development including insurance courses and certifications.
- Ability to manage and service an active book of business comprised of diverse municipal member organizations in a fast paced and challenging business environment.
- Able to prioritize competing deliverables ahead of internal and external deadlines.
- Demonstrated fluency in using standard office software packages (MS Office : Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).
Communicating and Influencing Skills
- Outstanding oral communication skills will be necessary for telephone, one-on-one communication, and presentations to groups.
- Proven track record of meeting sales targets and / or business development experience required.
- Investigative by nature with an inquiring mindset that actively uncovers member needs through effective lines of questioning, with the ability to offer solutions that both meet member needs and resolve member inquiries.
- Experience relating technical and program information to program participants with varying levels of expertise in a clear and easily understood manner including stakeholder workshops, webinars, and presentations.
- Excellent written communication skills for presentations, technical reports, e-mail, and other written documents.
Responsibilities
- Educates and consults with member organizations on risk management, risk transfer, market issues and trends using current and relevant market / industry information and data.
- Provides advice to a large and diverse group of municipal and municipally related member organizations on a variety of insurance matters;
including specific insurance coverages and helping to resolve member concerns.
- Retains and grows Alberta Municipalities’ business, cultivates relationships with insurance and risk management decision-makers in the member organization as well as with day-to-day client contacts.
- Serves as a trusted business adviser on all pertinent issues; monitors member satisfaction; reports and resolves member issues and concerns and reviews client expectations to ensure the relationship is mutually acceptable and beneficial.
- Analyze member-specific risk exposures and assist in determining coverage requirements as the member grows and / or experiences organizational change.
- Actively seeks opportunities to offer and able to readily communicate Alberta Municipalities program, standalone placement and business service solutions to members where additional coverage requirements have been discovered.
- Prepares new business quotations as required.
- Assists in preparing underwriting information for submission to sub-broker / external markets.
- Prepares members for upcoming annual renewal cycle through the production of pre-renewal and post renewal documentation and presents findings and develops responses during face-to-face pre / post renewal presentations.
- Calculates adjustments and premiums on policies and other insurance documents
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
