Duties

As a Firearms Officer you will have the opportunity to assist in administering the Firearms Act Canada (the Act) under a designation of authority from the Chief Firearms Officer.

Duties of this positon include, but are not limited to :

Investigating, analyzing and making decisions to approve, refuse or revoke firearms licences and authorizations for individuals, businesses and non-profit organizations.

Decisions are based on eligibility under the Act and potential risk to public safety.

Accessing police, court and other secure information databases, conducting interviews with a broad spectrum of people (e.

g. licence applicants, licensee family members / employers / etc., medical professionals, police, Crown and others) in order to undertake thorough investigations.

  • Coordinating and carrying out inspections of firearms businesses, shooting ranges and some private dwelling houses to ensure compliance with the Act and Regulations.
  • Planning and implementing outreaches to clients and stakeholder groups (e.g. remote or indigenous communities, other government departments, police, public interest groups) to educate and assist with compliance.
  • Preparing and submitting legal documents such as notices of refusal or revocation, court briefs, affidavits and disclosure materials.

Most decisions to refuse or revoke licences or authorizations can be referred to a provincial court for a review of the decision.

Intent of the process

A pool of candidates will be established and will be used to staff positions within the Canadian Firearms Program on an indeterminate or specified period (including term, acting, or assignment) basis, with various linguistic profiles and various RCMP security clearances.

Should a Civilian Member (CM) be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to the Public Service (PS) category for the CM.

Secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives.

  • Significant experience conducting detailed investigations
  • Significant experience conducting interviews to obtain detailed information
  • Significant experience preparing correspondence that articulates detailed decisions or recommendations
  • Significant experience interpreting and applying federal or provincial legislation or regulations

Experience building partnerships with internal and external partners

Experience using a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word and Excel

Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of the experience normally associated with having performed a broad range of complex related activities.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experience handling, using or identifying firearms.

Experience dealing with courts and court officials or providing court testimony.

Fluency in an Indigenous, South Asian, Asian or Persian language or any language other than English or French.

Successful completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.

NOTE : Candidates do not need to have completed these courses to apply. They must, however, have

successfully completed them prior to an offer of employment being made.

RCMP Enhanced Reliability Security Clearance

Must work in an environment that involves possible exposure to unsettling and / or graphic police files.

Must travel to and work in remote, rugged terrain, and other locations as required.

Must work overtime and variable hours as required.

Must handle firearms, as required, throughout their time in the position.

Must lift and carry up to 25 kg (+55 pounds), as required, throughout their time in the position.

Possession of a valid driver's licence.
