Reporting to the Wildlife Manager, North Baffin the Conservation Officer III (COIII) initiates, administers and delivers approved programs, projects and services pertaining to wildlife management, environmental protection and the development of the mixed / traditional economy in assigned area of Nunavut in accordance with all Acts, regulations and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA).

The efforts of this officer will result in a sustainable renewable resource economy and a traditional harvest that satisfies the needs of uses.

The CO III will supervise officers in various communities.

The CO III takes the lead role in enforcing the Wildlife Act and Regulations, Environmental Protection Act and all other legislation for which officer status has been granted (i.

e. Fisheries Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act) pertaining to wildlife and supports departmental wildlife research. The CO III maintains the administrative systems of the area station to comply with the requirements of the department and the Government of Nunavut (GN).

The incumbent is responsible for developing the sustainable development economy for the maintenance of the community’s mixed / traditional economy based lifestyle and supports district tourism outfitter development.

A major part of this position is to maintain effective and efficient operation and maintenance of all territorial parks and facilities within the district area.

Another role of the COIII is to inspect and issue licenses to sport lodges, naturalist lodges and outfitter services. The CO III will protect the public from hazards caused by dangerous goods and contaminants and maintains environmental quality standards.

The incumbent supervises junior officers in various communities and conducts public education and training in the proper use of renewable resources to strengthen public understanding of conservation ethics, principles and practice.

The CO III assists local HTO with organization, maintenance and development to achieve an effective co-management relationship within the environment.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized completion of an accredited two-year natural resources technical institute with three years experience as Conservation Officer, and three years supervisory experience.

The successful candidate must hold or be willing to get a valid driver’s license to driver trucks, snowmobiles, ATVs and boats as required within six (6) months of employment.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut (Inuinnaqtun), English and French. Ability to communicate in Inuktitut is considered an asset for this position.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
