Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Operations, the Recreation Therapist is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of individual and group therapeutic recreation treatment interventions and programming based on the social, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs of residents.

Provides clinical therapeutic assessments and considers recreation / leisure goals needs, interests and abilities of residents.

Works in close collaboration with the Recreation Coordinator in program planning. Responsibilities Utilizes the philosophy and vision of the facility to plan, promote, organize, implement, and evaluate a wide range of recreation and social programs designed to meet the needs of the residents.

Directs recreation programming working in close collaboration with the Recreation Coordinator. Organizes and ensures space and supply requirements are available for programs.

Liases with Recreation Coordinator on program staffing requirements. Connects with external agencies and parties as needed for programming.

Conducts comprehensive therapeutic recreation assessments for new residents and reassesses appropriate programs. Monitors, evaluates and documents resident participation and progress and monitors intervention with observations, reporting and interpretation.

As required, determines the recreation / leisure program(s) which meet the resident's needs and abilities by reviewing the care plan, interviewing the / resident regarding their social / leisure history, and consulting with family and interdisciplinary staff;

identifies, evaluates, implements, and documents recreation / leisure goals and objectives based on individual interests and abilities.

Conducts recreation programs and activities as appropriate. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team in resident care and program related issues.

Provides orientation, guidance, and collegial information or demonstration of equipment or work methods and processes to others including peers, new staff, and students such as through hospital in-services, meetings or one-to one.

Participates in programs and initiatives such as clinical rounds, discharge planning, research activities, quality improvement, team conferences, meetings, and the development of new policies, procedures and standards for care / program delivery.

Contributes to discussions; reports back on decisions, outcomes and recommendations. Provides education and guidance in individual or group settings to residents / family / volunteers as required.

Maintains a safe environment for residents, families, volunteers and staff by following established emergency and safety practices and procedures;

identifies problems related to resident safety and care standards and informs the Manager or designate. Provides orientation, clinical work direction and provides input to the evaluation of recreation assistants.

Participates on interview panels and provides input regarding the selection of recreation staff. Provides orientation and evaluation of volunteers;

liaises between volunteers and other members of the treatment team. Provides instruction and / or supervision to students.

Evaluates and provides feedback on student progress. Maintains and orders recreation supplies subject to approval by the clinical manager.

Provides input regarding the operating and capital budget of department, as required. Compiles / prepares reports / records and workload statistics.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training & Experience Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy.

Three years' recent, related experience in Geriatrics. Eligible for membership with the B.C. Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).

Current certificate in First Aid and CPR Level C. FoodSafe Level 1. Skills & Abilities Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written English.

Must be physically fit to perform the role. Ability to prioritize workload. Ability to plan programs.
