We are currently seeking an experienced Class 1 Driver to transport a specialized Mobile Medical Unit
Position Summary
We are seeking a professional and safety-focused Class 1 Driver to safely transport and operate 53-foot specialized medical units between Alberta Health Services (AHS) clinic locations throughout Alberta.
This is a specialized driving position that includes the takedown, transportation, positioning, leveling, and setup of mobile medical units. Drivers must operate the equipment carefully to protect sensitive medical equipment and ensure each unit is properly prepared for AHS nurses and clinic operations.
Schedules and movement instructions will be provided based on Alberta Health Services clinic schedules.
General Responsibilities
The driver will:
- Hold a valid Alberta Class 1 Driver’s Licence.
- Have experience operating 53-foot trailers and vans.
- Safely transport specialized medical units between AHS clinic locations throughout Alberta.
- Follow assigned schedules, routes, and movement instructions based on AHS clinic requirements.
- Complete required Motive daily logs.
- Complete all required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Follow all company and Alberta Health Services safety requirements.
- Follow all applicable rules of the road and hours-of-service requirements.
- Maintain a professional standard when working at AHS clinic locations and around healthcare staff and clients.
Departure / Takedown
Before leaving an AHS clinic location, the driver will:
- Remove and stow the front and rear steps.
- Unplug shore power, where applicable.
- Ensure generators are running and operational for transport.
- Stow safety cones.
- Check belly boxes and ensure they are properly secured.
- Enter the unit and secure chairs, windows, and all loose or small interior items for transportation.
- Complete the required pre-trip inspection.
- Confirm the trailer is properly secured and ready for safe transport.
Transportation
The driver will:
- Transport the trailer to the next assigned AHS clinic or designated location.
- Follow the assigned route and AHS clinic schedule.
- Comply with all rules of the road, applicable speed limits, and AHS site or speed requirements.
- Operate the unit carefully to minimize vibration, sudden braking, impacts, and other conditions that could affect sensitive medical equipment.
- Promptly report accidents, damage, breakdowns, delays, or other operational issues to the appropriate company contact.
- Follow all applicable transportation and safety requirements.
All required transportation permits will be in place. The driver is not responsible for obtaining permits.
Arrival / Setup
Upon arrival at the AHS clinic or designated location, the driver will:
- Safely position and level the unit.
- Install the front and rear steps.
- Place safety cones.
- Connect shore power, where applicable, and/or ensure generators are on and operational.
- Check belly boxes and exterior equipment.
- Enter the unit and release or unstrap chairs and other items secured for transportation.
- Ensure the unit is properly set up and ready for AHS nurses and clinic operations.
- Report any damage, equipment concerns, or other issues to the appropriate company contact.
Wheelchair Lift Assistance
The specialized medical unit is equipped with a wheelchair lift.
If a client requires assistance boarding or exiting the unit, the driver may be dispatched to assist with the operation of the wheelchair lift system.
The driver is responsible only for assisting with the mechanical operation of the wheelchair lift. The driver is not required or responsible for providing medical care to the client. Nurse supervision will be provided when required.
Bobtail, Layover & Emergency Standby
- When the trailer has been dropped and no further movement is required, the driver will bobtail back to the designated home terminal or other assigned location.
- Layovers may be required when the medical unit is scheduled to move to another AHS clinic later that day or the following day.
- During layovers, the driver must remain in the designated area and be available as required.
- During fire season or other emergency conditions, Alberta Health Services may require the driver to remain close to the medical unit for emergency evacuation or relocation.
- If called during an emergency, the driver will hook up and transport the trailer to the home terminal or another designated safe location.
Additional Work Opportunities
When available, and if the employee wishes to accept additional work, shifts may include:
- 53-foot flatdeck work, including pipe transportation in and around the Edmonton area.
- Line haul driving opportunities.
- Shop and yard maintenance during downtime or slower periods.
Additional assignments are subject to availability, driver qualifications, and scheduling requirements.
Qualifications
- Valid Alberta Class 1 Driver’s Licence.
- Experience operating 53-foot trailers and vans.
- Strong backing, maneuvering, positioning, and trailer-handling skills.
- Ability to complete required pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Ability to complete Motive electronic driver logs.
- Strong commitment to safety and responsible driving practices.
- Ability to follow schedules, routes, procedures, and site-specific instructions.
- Willing and able to travel throughout Alberta.
- Ability to work independently and responsibly.
- Flexibility to accommodate changing AHS clinic schedules, layovers, and emergency standby when required.
- Professional and respectful when interacting with AHS nurses, healthcare professionals, clients, and members of the public.
Overall Driver Responsibility
The driver is responsible for ensuring each Alberta Health Services specialized medical unit is properly taken down, safely transported, positioned, leveled, and fully set up at its assigned clinic location.
The driver must take appropriate care to protect the medical unit and equipment throughout transportation and follow all applicable company, Alberta Health Services, safety, transportation, and hours-of-service requirements.
