The Position

The Criminal Justice Program in Athabasca University's Centre for Social Sciences in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing December 1, 2024.

This is a full-time position located in Alberta. Athabasca University is a fully accredited, comprehensive academic and research post-secondary institution committed to facilitating open access to education.

In addition to demonstrating research excellence, the candidate will be expected to develop new courses as determined by the needs of the program and their research interests.

The candidate will also coordinate and revise existing courses in the program. Evidence of teaching excellence is required, and commitment to exploring and advancing the use of contemporary digital technologies in online teaching and learning is preferred.

Experience supervising graduate students would also be considered an asset. The successful applicant will teach graduate courses, as the occasion arises.

All faculty members are expected to participate in administrative committees, including those pertaining to centre, faculty, or university-wide endeavours.

Additionally, members are expected to participate in service to the greater external community.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, or a related field and will complement our current Criminal Justice faculty's expertise in clinical forensic psychology.

Applications are encouraged from those whose scholarship critically addresses the criminal justice system. Ideally, we are seeking a candidate with an active research program and publication record in one or more of the following areas : policing, corrections, crime trends, or criminal victimization.

Early career scholars are highly encouraged to apply.

  • The successful applicant will be expected to maintain a robust research program in a virtual environment and be able to provide research training opportunities for Criminal Justice students.
  • Experience in distance learning and familiarity with digital teaching technologies would also be preferred assets.
