Duties
- Provide supportive nursing care consistent with patient treatment / rehabilitation needs and goals.
- Assist in assessment of patients’ needs and in the development, implementation and evaluation of nursing care plans for assigned patients in collaboration and consultation with members of the inter-disciplinary team.
- Provide nursing services as assigned, assist patients with daily living activities and personal care.
- Provide a safe, therapeutic environment including crisis management and emergency nursing care.
- Administers medications and performs treatments within the RPN’s full scope of practice according to applicable regulations and the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards and policies and procedures of the Royal.
- Document accurate reports of data collection, interpretation, planning implementing and evaluating of care in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Documentation Standard.
- Collaborates with the Registered Nurse to effectively manage rapidly changing situations.
- Establishes and promotes effective therapeutic relationships between staff members, patients and their families.
- Identifies patient needs and responds to them appropriately and promptly.
- Maximize the person’s function, participation and control in their recovery.
- Maintain up to date knowledge and practice of program policies, procedures, applicable legislation, and mental health best practices.
- Demonstrates an awareness of and complies with, the vision and value statements of the Royal, relevant policies, procedures, responsibilities and routines and other relevant information.
- Accountable to meet College of Nurses of Ontario Standards for RPN’s.
- Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination-Free Workplace policy.
- Engages in enhancing knowledge through ongoing learning, education and reflective practice.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
- Graduate of recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing;
- Current registration as a Registered Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Minimum of two years recent experience with adults with psychiatric / mental health illness preferred.
- Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
- Ability to perform full Registered Practical Nursing functions on all units at BMHC.
- Certified in CPR and First Aid.
- WHMIS and Fire training update in preceding 12 months.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, and Substitute Decision Act.
- Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check for vulnerable sector.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a professional multi-disciplinary treatment team.
- Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training ( required.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Safety and Security in the Workplace Training (candidate must agree to complete prior to start date if this qualification is not met).
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, oral comprehension, reading comprehension and written expression. Bilingual is an asset.
