Description
The Department of Physiology Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Lab Assistant .
This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 4 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator.
This position is comprised of technical and clerical functions related to many aspects within the lab such as filing purchase order records and helping to maintain laboratory data bases.
Responsible include maintaining aquatic animals and chemical inventories, recording and disposal of chemical waste from the lab, recording and disposal of old equipment from the lab and assisting in experiments as required.
Ability to prioritize and focus on a constant basis is essential.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to) :
Maintain aquatic animals
Perform periodic lab cleaning and reorganizations, especially freezers and refrigerators
Wash class wear, make up solutions and assist in conducting experiments as required
Replace empty gas cylinders
Assist in administrative tasks
Make figures and slides for presentations
Assist other lab personnel (technical and trainees) when required
Keeps inventory up-to-date and stocked
Prepares solutions
Lab Chores like biohazard waste disposal
Generate and organized laboratory environment, with well-stocked common supplies, timely and correct ordering of consumables / equipment, well-kept and current records
Keep lab and work area clean and safe
Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work
Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
Qualifications / Requirements :
An undergraduate degree in biology or related field is required
Working knowledge of Microsoft office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet skills
Ability to manage time and projects well
Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
