Are we right for you...

We’re passionate about people and creating sustainable, safe and affordable public transit solutions to residents across BC.

We are an organization that has a people-first approach and considers people first in every business decision that we make.

We are part of the solution and what we do matters; from fighting climate change with battery electric buses, to affordability through cost effective transportation, to connecting remote communities, we bring the heart, soul and innovation to public transportation.

It’s an exciting time to be in the public transportation sector and we’re looking for a creative and passionate leader to join our team.

Not only would you be joining an engaged organization, but you’d also get to enjoy flexible work arrangements, extended benefits and a pension plan as just a few of the benefits BC Transit employees are eligible for.

Keep reading to find out if this role is meant for you!

What you'll be doing...

We are currently hiring a Project Manager to support a financial system implementation project which will transform our financial planning and analysis processes.

You may also be asked to work on other projects concurrently.

You are a seasoned project manager and will be responsible for the management and delivery of technology projects in accordance with deadlines, budget and complex funding constraints.

You will work to deliver innovative technology to support BC Transit’s vision of being our rider’s best transportation solution.

BC Transit typically works with 3rd party vendors to implement solutions with us rather than developing our own software or solutions;

this means working closely with stakeholders, procurement teams, and vendors. Throughout these stages, you will support the development of requirements, public procurement activities such as NRFPs, and implementation of solutions with vendors.

Collaboration will be key to success, along with project facilitation, project documentation, communication and change management.

Specifically, you will have the opportunity to :

  • Collaborate closely with senior leaders in Finance and IT to understand their objectives and propose approaches to meet their needs.
  • Negotiate priorities with diverse stakeholders and make recommendations to keep the project moving forward.
  • Manage vendors and ensure BC Transit’s needs are clearly communicated and met.
  • Manage technology projects by developing detailed project plans that include scope, cost, schedule and quality; perform risk analysis, determine resources, while overseeing communications and records management.

What you might love about this role :

The opportunity to practice diverse ways of working. We are developing standards and maturing our project management practice;

however, not all projects and stakeholders are the same. Both time-tested and original ways of engaging business clients will be required.

  • Learning the ins and outs of financial planning within a complex funding structure.
  • Balancing business needs with long-term technology complexity and support cost implications.
  • This role requires long-term thinking and a methodical mindset to achieve business objectives.

What might not resonate :

  • Strict adherence to a stage gate framework within a waterfall project management environment.
  • As a Crown corporation, we have procurement and capitalization rules that must be followed to ensure responsible financial stewardship of public funds.
  • Thorough reviews and approval processes for major project decisions.
  • This is a busy team with a large number of active projects. You will be asked to back up your colleagues during their absences and contribute to maturing project management practices while balancing a busy workload.

As a PM in IT, you will also :

  • Engage with a diverse group of stakeholders across the BC Transit landscape to develop business cases, and plan project timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Ensure that project status and issues are communicated to project team, stakeholders, and sponsors.
  • Effectively set and continually manage project expectations with team members and other stakeholders.
  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts within project teams.
  • Prepare a variety of status reports and presentations for relevant stakeholders.
  • Work closely with procurement and contracts teams to develop and manage vendor solutions and relationships.

What you'll bring to the table...

We love lifelong Learners and recommend the following mix of education or certifications to be successful in conjunction with relevant experience :

  • Post-Secondary degree in computer science, business or engineering with a technology focus, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Considerable experience in a related field combined with at least 5 years’ experience leading and managing complex projects.
  • Experience working within a multi-level stakeholder engagement process
  • A Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent training is considered an asset for this position.

For additional information about the full accountabilities of this position please review the IT Project Manager Job Description.

What we'll bring to the table...

  • Comprehensive medical and dental benefits to support you and your family, regardless of what life throws at you
  • Membership in a gold plated defined benefit pension plan, meaning it’s the best in the Province and one of the best in the country;

putting you in a strong position when it comes time to retire

  • Access to fitness and lifestyle centers at our Victoria and Langford offices to help you take care of your physical fitness and health
  • Various programs that support employees such as an Employee Assistance Program and health and wellness initiatives and events aimed at fostering your mental health
  • Free parking for when you need to drive to the office
  • A complimentary employee bus pass (plus taxable dependent passes)
  • A corporate learning and development program to help you in continuous career growth
  • An employee recognition program where we all recognize each other's successes (not just your Leaders!)
  • A social club that gives you access to events throughout Victoria

What next steps could look like...

  • Assignments will be shared with shortlisted candidates on December 3rd, 2024
  • Interviews will take place between January 7th - 9th, 2025
  • An eligibility list for future full time regular and temporary full time vacancies may be established
  • The position requires the completion of a Criminal Record Check or Vulnerable Sector Search.
