Phlebotomy Technician

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

• Under the direction of the MLA Team Lead, Charge Technologist(s) or Manager, the Phlebotomist is responsible for performing duties including : collecting blood samples, performing ECG's, following proper blood collection techniques as outlined in the phlebotomy manual;
• ensuring correct patient identification prior to collecting and accurately labelling the samples; transporting of specimens to the laboratory for testing;

reporting immediately, any unusual incidents involving patients which occur in the performance of duties; following established safety and infection control procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS :

• Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate from a recognized training facility (in good standing);
• MLPAO (OSMT) and / or CSMLS Medical Laboratory Assistant / Technician (MLA / T) certification required;
• Recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital or medical laboratory setting;
• Proven effective organizational, prioritization and time-management abilities;
• Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills;
• Proven strong team player abilities with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
• Knowledge of infection control principles and practices;
• Physically able to perform duties of lifting, bending, sitting and prolonged standing and walking;
• Ability to work in a high paced environment with frequent interruptions;
• Proven computer / keyboarding experience;
• Experience with pneumatic tube transport systems, an asset; and
• Must have satisfactory performance record;

• Proven good attendance record with capability of maintaining this same standard

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU Local 348.

Successful applicants must provide a satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector, dated within the past six (6) months.
