Medical Advisor (Part-Time, 2 days / week, 2-year term)

As a Medical Advisor, you will work to enhance quality of care and patient safety through physician assessment and education, policy development and collegial interaction.

The work takes place in a supportive, dynamic, team-based environment.

Medical Advisors act as a resource and provide advice to College staff and Committees. Their role is to advance and improve patient care by applying their clinical knowledge and skills, expertise in leadership, collaborative team functioning, education and mentoring, and high standards of professionalism.

This expertise is applied to specific cases involving physicians undergoing investigations, assessments, and application for independent practice certificates.

Medical Advisors also use their specialized knowledge on assignments and projects designed to build and maintain public trust in the medical profession.

This is a 2-year term position, part-time hours (approx. 2 days / week)

Specifically, the Medical Advisors :

  • Work within the College’s Committee structure and legislative requirements, providing advice to staff and statutory committees for member-specific cases and policy / program discussions.
  • Provide recommendations within their clinical scope and expertise to CPSO Leadership staff and other staff on issues as required.
  • Review key clinical documents for assimilation into member specific case work.
  • Develop individualized educational plans for members.
  • Provide clinical advice on new policies and policies under review.
  • Serve as a College representative on approved external committees and projects.
  • Support outreach efforts by meeting and speaking with or presenting to groups of physicians and others communicating College positions about a variety of College issues and policies.
  • Liaise with other bodies as required such as RCPSC, CFPC, OMA, PHP, CMPA.
  • Provide the College’s Advisory Services Department with assistance in reviewing and analysing issues and inquiries from the profession.

The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated track record of adaptability and open-mindedness, allowing them to excel in a dynamic setting.

Medical Advisor responsibilities are subject to change based on program needs and demands.

Qualifications

  • Ten or more years’ experience in Family or General Practice preferred.
  • Must be eligible to be issued an independent certificate of registration in Ontario.
  • Must be certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Have a broad understanding of medicine in general through clinical practice, teaching or leadership of medical programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in a health care organization or academic environment through department lead or committee chair positions.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the health care system, Ontario Primary Care Models, medical education system and governance within different kinds of facilities.
  • Experience working in complex projects involving stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaborative teamwork qualities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience with physician assessment, education, continuing professional development, and adult education principles.
  • Strong networks with medical and health care organizations.
  • Good understanding of the mandate of the CPSO, RHPA, Medicine Act and professional expectations of practicing physicians.
  • Understands and upholds the competencies outlined in the CanMeds Framework.
  • Proficient computer experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat.
