We’re currently recruiting for a Senior Construction Inspector. The primary responsibilities for the job are to perform a variety of complex technical civil engineering construction inspection work for City-funded capital projects as well as development projects. Oversee assigned public works projects and contracts; and provide assistance to higher level engineering staff. This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and the OPIEU union. Open until filled with first review on January 13, 2026.##

  • Essential Functions :
  • Act as lead inspector and the City’s field representative on City-funded capital construction projects and on developer-funded projects.
  • Monitor work for acceptability and conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Create accurate pay notes and assist office staff in the preparation of monthly contractor pay estimates for City-Funded projects.
  • Work with the construction project engineer in ensuring that the project is built on time, within budget where applicable, and in conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Act as the City’s lead representative to the project’s neighbors and members of the general public, answering questions and addressing concerns as well as complaints.
  • Drive a city vehicle in a safe and appropriate manner in order to travel between various worksites.
  • Review and monitor traffic control plans for construction projects.
  • Coordinate public works projects with applicable city, state and federal officials and other relevant agencies and parties.
  • Lead temporary personnel for annual summer construction peak workload.##
  • Qualifications
  • Experience and Education
  • Senior Construction Inspector
  • Three (3) years of civil construction inspection experience and increasingly responsible technical engineering experience in construction inspection.
  • Equivalent to an Associate's Degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering or related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Construction Inspector
  • Two (2) years of civil construction inspection or technical engineering experience.
  • Equivalent to an Associate's Degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering or related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Computer Skills
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products.
  • Required Licenses and / or Certifications
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to obtain a Nuclear Densometer Gauge Operator’s Certification within three months.
  • Knowledge
  • Principles and practices of civil engineering including hydrology, hydraulics, soils, water and sewer utility design, transportation design, and basic structures;
  • Design and construction theory and engineering design standards;
  • Terminology, methods, practices, and techniques of drafting, computer aided design, and geographic information systems;
  • Civil engineering principles and practices related to the inspection of public works construction;
  • Principles, methods, equipment, and safety standards of construction zone traffic control practices , including those applicable to pedestrian and bicycle facilities;
  • Engineering maps and records;
  • Basic principles and practices of surveying;
  • Construction plans and specifications;
  • Materials, methods, and techniques of modern construction;
  • Principles, methods, materials, equipment, and safety standards of construction inspection and materials testing;
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws that pertain to : Public Works construction project management
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • Use of personal computers and basic software
  • Abilities
  • Interpret and apply federal, state and local policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations;
  • Interpret, and apply survey field notes in the performance of construction inspection;
  • Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications;
  • Research records, maps and other data to obtain engineering data;
  • Deal firmly and tactfully with contractors, developers, engineers, property owners, neighbors and parties of interest;
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Demonstrate good judgment and decision making;
  • Operate a personal computer and appropriate software
  • Work in a manner consistent with the City of Vancouver’s Operating Principles
  • Work and act as a team player in all interactions with other City employees
  • Provide a high level of customer service at all times
  • Project and maintain a positive image with those contacted in the course of work
  • Develop and maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships with team members and others
  • Consistently provide quality service
  • Maintain regular and dependable attendance
