Government Relations Specialist :

Our client is searching for a Government Relations Specialist to join their team. This role will be responsible for building relationships to advocate for the company’s interests, developing the government relations strategy, and finding creative ways to bring key issues to the attention of government officials.

A successful candidate will have outstanding leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to influence others, build relationships, and synthesize complex information into clear and concise recommendations.

This role reports to the Director of Communications.

Your success will be defined by your ability to :

  • Develop and implement a government relations strategy and engagement plan to advance company interests with relevant government officials and policymakers at the municipal level
  • Monitor industry-related legislative, policy and regulatory activity that may affect the industry or the company and provide timely updates to internal stakeholders as well as recommendations and advocacy strategies that advance company goals
  • Develop strategic policy positions, including ones focusing on the competitiveness of the industry
  • In partnership with organized real estate partners, assist in developing strategic priorities that align with the broader public policy and government affairs landscape
  • Participate in and professionally represent the company in meetings, consultations, roundtables and conferences with government officials, industry associations, and other stakeholders as required and in collaboration with the CEO
  • In collaboration with Industry Associations, organize Provincial / Federal based government meetings, events, receptions, during times of elections and lobby days
  • Act as a liaison for the Political Action Committee, providing expert input and support as needed
  • Build and manage strong relationships with external stakeholders such as government officials, key public influencers, industry associations, and other external partners, building partnerships and advocating for the company’s priorities through effective communication and relationship building efforts
  • Act as the connector between government officials and key stakeholders within the company
  • Collaborate with Industry Organizations on federal and provincial advocacy initiatives and work to clearly define work scope of the company’s government relations efforts
  • Integrate and work collaboratively with internal stakeholders, including the CEO, Governance Department, among others to ensure alignment on advocacy strategies
  • Provide employee support by keeping apprised of their concerns, issues that impact them, as well as identifying advocacy events / opportunities for them
  • Create educational communication pieces including content for internal newsletters and leave-behinds that enhance the employee awareness of advocacy efforts and key issues
  • Collaborate with the Communications Team to create branded campaign pieces for the employee portal, social media, or other communication platforms.
  • Attend key events throughout the year
  • Support the Communications Team with other employee events throughout the year through brainstorming and planning, inviting key officials, acting as liaison to such officials on event day, and aiding with onsite logistics
  • Conduct research and analysis on key current and emerging policy issues, including geopolitical developments and trends in that region
  • Support internal reporting including data collection, activity monitoring and tracking and analysis, ensuring that outputs and deliverables are met
  • Develop and maintain a contact database that tracks and manages stakeholders and external contacts, notes on all issues and initiatives and integrate it with the CRM platform
  • Develop and deliver presentations and briefing materials on key policy issues and advocacy strategies for the CEO, Board of Directors, and the Leadership Team
  • Provide regular updates to the Director of Communications on key issues and initiatives
  • Draft government correspondence, pre-budget submissions, position papers, media releases, etc.
  • Perform general administrative duties as required to support the operation of the office
  • Attend all staff and department specific meetings and training

Your strengths include :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field, such as Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, or a related field
  • 3+ years experience in public policy, government relations, or advocacy
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing advocacy strategies and building relationships with government officials and policymakers
  • Demonstrated experience in developing creative and effective communication pieces
  • A solid network (or the ability to develop one) of key stakeholders, including both federal and provincial government officials, relevant agencies and industry associations
  • Strong capacity to manage ambiguity, multi-task, and pivot in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Non-profit or association experience is preferred
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s Real Estate industry is considered a plus
