The Role

We are currently seeking a Student Research Assistant for the Free Trade Activism History Project.

The implementation of the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement ( CUSFTA ) in January 1989 marked a decisive moment in the restructuring of Canada's economy.

Free trade facilitated the rise of a new policy regime based on deregulation, privatization, and offshoring. With my collaborator Dr.

Chris Hurl of Concordia University (Sociology), in January of 2022 we launched the Free Trade Activist Project website to establish our research data as a public resource to be used by other researchers.

This website documents the formation of activist networks and the work they undertook to resist free trade. Currently, the website contains transcriptions of oral-history interviews with research participants, collected ephemera, a timeline of key events leading up to the signing and implementation of the Canada-US Free Trade Agreement in 1989, along with other information.
