Role
Reporting to a Senior Engineer, the role of Protection and Controls Designer / Engineer is designing of protection and control schemes in electrical facilities for the Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sectors. Protection and Controls Designer / Engineer will apply their knowledge and experience to analyze, evaluate, and create new designs and drawings and revise existing designs and drawings with guidance from senior engineering personnel, as needed.
Responsibilities
- Apply knowledge of components, arrangements, and standards to complete design packages for substations that include, but are not limited to, schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials.
- Working knowledge of MathCAD, Microsoft Office, Aspen Oneliner and CAPE.
- Excellent knowledge of modern digital protective relays in utility applications and experience calculating relay settings.
- Technical knowledge and understanding of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment and substation design.
- Familiarity with Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) rules will be an asset.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
- Competent in basic computer skills to include Microstation, Autocad, Trane Software and Microsoft Office products
- Good Knowledge of relevant legislations, standards, regulations, guides and good practise (CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE standards.)
- Familiarity with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms and protocols used to provide local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). Knowledge of IEC61850
- Familiarity in design of electrical facilities for Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sector

Degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering degree required; or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institutionEligible for registration with APEGGA or ASETPreference will be given to candidates that possess previous engineering experience in electrical facilities for the Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sectorsPreference will be given to candidates who have experience in construction and field installationsFamiliar with Protection and Control philosophies, schemes, and standards.Experience in construction and field installations an assetProficient in medium / high voltage power engineering in electrical facilities for the Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sectorsProficient ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematicsPossess strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneouslyStrong analytical and troubleshooting skillsDedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlinesNavigate computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasksBenefits
