The Comox Valley, known as 'Land of Plenty' has a temperate climate- very seldom below minus 5! Local produce thrives and everyone engages in the local farmers markets.
We essentially follow the UK seasons but our summer always arrives! Mid 20s for 3-4 months, similar to France summers. The community is a good size and comparable with a large town in UK, with approximately 100,000 population.
Density is 'Canada Scale' and the sense of space is eye opening coming from UK. There is no rush hour and everything is a 10 minute drive (or 20 minute cycle).
It has all amenities you would expect- cafes, pubs, restaurants, cinema, parks, marina. We are well served by the 2nd largest airport after Vancouver in BC which is a huge plus to living here.
A slightly larger community of Nanaimo is 1 hour drive south. Vancouver is a 35 minute flight from Comox Airport! There are 5 flights daily.
The Comox Valley is a world destination with a healthy reliance on tourism. We have world class mountain biking, fishing and hiking.
In the winter we are spoiled with our own ski resort- Mount Washington. Here are a few more details about our clinics. We are a 2-site clinic, Crown Isle (Courtenay) and Port Augusta (Comox).
We are currently 10 GPs and a dermatologist and we all have young families. We are a stable and cohesive group, each with something different to offer.
Special interests include Ob / women's health, hospital work, urgent care, orthopaedic / MSK medicine, seniors health and marginalised / LGBT healthcare.
Currently we have 14,000 registered patients. There is lots of 'corridor exchanges' with colleagues for support and back up and a very collegial atmosphere.
The owner and medical director oversees the clinic operations in line with CPSBC standards and we recently received an excellent report following assessment by them.
They place no stipulations on how physicians practice, schedule, bill etc. They endeavour to work with all physicians in delivering the space and logistical back up to support them in however they wish to develop their practices.
Turn key facilities are provided with fully supportive clinic staff in place, and focused on making your day easier. Billing is optimized by staff for each physician and checked frequently with direct communication with MSP when uncertainty arises.
They are EMR focused and continue to optimize it for physicians and staff and are almost paperless! They are involved with the UBC mentorship program and support new physicians in finding their feet when starting out into practice.
Both clinics are recognized as UBC training sites and we have medical students and residents attached frequently. The opportunity we have here really is very special.
Their focus is on recruitment and they strive to put themselves in the candidate's shoes when considering how to structure their model.
Our 10 physicians are new practices such is the growing population and demand here.
