Job Description

Our client, The Kelowna Curling Club is one of the largest and most active curling clubs in the world. They have been an important part of the Central Okanagan since 1942 and has been integral in sport and community gatherings.

Hosting everything from diverse ability games to World Championships, the Curling Club has been home to some very memorable times.

Within the building, you will find 12 sheets of ice, three dressing rooms, a large viewing area that overlooks the ice as well as a fully licensed restaurant and lounge.

During the spring and summer months, the ice is removed, and the Curling Club is used to host many different types of events such as tradeshows and different markets.

With a total floor space of 27,300 square feet, there is plenty of space to host 1000+ people at one time.

They are currently looking to add a full-time Facility Manager to their team who will be responsible for the safe operation of the refrigeration plant as well as overall oversight of the building and maintenance.

As the successful candidate, a typical day for this position may include responsibilities such as, ensuring that daily reports and bi-hourly checks are made on the refrigeration plant and ensuring that preventative maintenance duties are performed properly, safely and on schedule, such as cleaning filters, adding and removing oil, under floor heating, cleaning condenser jets, greasing motors and safely changing operating parameters of the plant.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead a team of ice makers and janitorial employees to ensure that the building is safe, that issues and concerns are rectified as soon as possible, and that preventative and proactive maintenance is scheduled and completed on time.

As someone who takes deep pride in their work, you will take ownership of this historic building, and be willing to jump in and assist with general maintenance, and / or arrange for various trades to come in and fix / maintain as required (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC).

A positive attitude, excellent leadership skills, strong work ethic, attention to detail and the ability to work independently and unsupervised are critical to the success of this role.

Ideally, you will be certified by the BC Safety Authority as a Refrigeration Operator, however if you currently do not hold that certification, we are happy to support you to obtain it.

Additional responsibilities will include :

  • Ensure that yearly maintenance of the refrigeration plant is performed in compliance with the established maintenance plan;
  • Ensure that safe work practices and good housekeeping habits dominate the work environment of the refrigeration plant;
  • Track and maintain records for long term change out, or inspection dates, for major refrigeration components;
  • Ensure that all safety controls on the refrigeration plant are tested and / or up to date with required mandatory replacement in compliance with the Safety Standards Act;
  • Start up and shut down of the plant during the on and off seasons;
  • Drain refrigerant from the compressors for extended off periods;
  • Troubleshoot and rectify arising maintenance / operational events;
  • Ensure that the chemical properties of the brine system are within prescribed parameters;
  • Ensure that chemical treatment of heat transfer water systems are maintained within prescribed parameters;
  • Ensure that qualified staffing protocols are followed in compliance with the Safety Standards Act and the requirements set out by Technical Safety BC;
  • Ensure that required personal safety equipment is in place and in good working order;
  • Maintain and update ammonia safety procedures documents and training;
  • Submit annual safety report to TSBC;
  • Keep records of all service / repairs on the ice plant and building maintenance;
  • Keep records of all pressure safety relief devices; serial numbers and change out dates;
  • Establish and maintain a training program for all power engineers and track the development of skills;
  • Oversee and set out the parameters of the annual service contract with refrigeration technical services;
  • Confirm the ice plant remote monitoring contract annually and keep a record of the contract;
  • Act as the Chairperson of the Safety Committee, meet regularly to review accidents, accident prevention and accident reaction protocols as well as ensure that employees, management and Council are informed of safety committee meetings;
  • Ensure that building evacuation drills are practiced and reviewed;
  • Assist the GM with annual building and maintenance budgets, obtain quotes for work when required;
  • Additional building maintenance as needed such as, g eneral repairs, installing baseboards, painting, snow removal and basic janitorial responsibilities (such as repairing leaking pipes).

Requirements

  • Certified by the BC Safety Authority as a Refrigeration Operator considered a strong asset;
  • Trade school certification or vocational training in a relevant field;
  • Proven experience as a Facilities Manager or similar role within a commercial or industrial setting;
  • Previous experience in a leadership role is considered an asset;
  • Strong knowledge of general maintenance processes and techniques;
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures;
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards;
  • Basic understanding of building codes and regulations;
  • Basic proficiency with computer software such as MS Office / Excel;
  • Mechanical aptitude;
  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively;
  • Self-motivated and ability to work effectively in team environment;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

Physical Requirements :

Required to stand and / or walk for up to 8 hours at a time. In addition, you will be required to push, pull, lift or carry 20+ kgs.

This is a full-time opportunity. Due to the nature of this position, you are the first call out for emergency alarms associated with refrigeration plant operation during the curling season.

The ability to work flexible hours and to be on call is required. This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to work hard during the winter months and enjoy all that the Okanagan has to offer during the summer months.

We anticipate offering the successful candidate a base pay between $65,000 and $75,000 dependent upon previous experience.
