Job Description

Our nonprofit client is seeking a Forensic Auditor (Accounting Specialist) to investigate and assess the professional conduct and competence of their members in line with their organization's public interest mandate and regulatory framework.

This role entails conducting independent investigations using forensic accounting practices. Responsibilities include uncovering accounting regulation violations, investigating fraud, conflicts of interest, and related matters, and making recommendations for appropriate actions.

The Forensic Auditor may also serve as an expert witness and implement practice controls as needed during investigations.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Investigate professional misconduct, competence, licensing, and unauthorized practice cases.
  • Plan, execute, and recommend actions for complex investigations.
  • Identify risks and conduct ongoing risk assessments.
  • Apply forensic auditing and fraud detection principles to evaluate client property handling by lawyers.
  • Prepare case files, authorization memos, and investigation reports.
  • Assess investigation files for resolution, including implementing practice controls, freezing trust accounts, or revoking licenses.
  • Identify candidates for remedial diversion and explore alternative dispute resolution options.
  • Maintain evidence handling procedures and conduct witness interviews.
  • Prepare reports and investigative documents.
  • Contribute to the development of standardized practices and performance targets.
  • Evaluate policies and propose changes related to investigative activities.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum five (5) years of forensic experience, preferably in a regulatory environment.
  • Familiarity with real estate and mortgage fraud investigations is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of the organization's mandate, legislation, and policies.
  • In-depth knowledge of current accounting practices, forensic investigation techniques, and dispute resolution methods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical abilities.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and technology.
  • Ability to work on-site and occasionally travel out of town for investigations.

Education

  • University degree or equivalent training / experience.
  • CPA designation is mandatory.
