Assistant Operations Manager, Processing Facilities
Reporting directly to the Operations Manager or designate, the Assistant Operations Manager, Processing Facilities is responsible for the overall supervision of all operational activities and assuring safe and efficient processing at the facility.
Process facilitation, health and safety oversight and knowledge transfer will be significant components of the role.
The candidate must have the ability to :
- Prioritize and effectively respond to competing demands for resources.
- Understand waste classifications and best methods of processing or disposal.
- Demonstrate the presence of a strong team player, people management skills, and the ability to work independently.
Note : This position is responsible for managing day and afternoon shift operations and may require flexible work hours to accommodate accordingly when the need arises
Key Responsibilities :
- Identifies operational priorities by assessing operational objectives such as, efficiency, cost savings, energy conservation, operator convenience, safety, environmental quality
- Identifies operational problems by observing and studying system functioning and performance results; investigating complaints and provide suggestions for resolution
- Develop corrective actions to solve operational issues as they arise
- Plan and schedule work for all aspects of the operations team at the facility.
- Daily supervision of all facility operations employees
- Provide training to new employees
- Resolution of employee conflicts / issues professionally
- Maintains safe and healthy work environment by following and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
- Assists with the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs and procedures for treatment, storage, transportation, and disposal of wastes including hazardous, non-hazardous, liquid and other chemical / special waste
- Assists with assessing available hazardous waste treatment and disposal alternatives, including costs involved, to compare economic impact of alternative methods.
- Assist customer service and service teams to address customer requests and scheduling based on knowledge of the facility operations and status.
- Coordinates between the GFL transportation team, other GFL facilities and third-party waste disposal destinations for outbound transport of waste
- Act as coach / mentor to assist operations staff to develop their technical knowledge and capabilities in their positions
- Act as management co-chair to the facility’s joint health and safety committee and maintain the certification required to perform the function
- Provides operational management information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing operating data and trends
- Maintain the branch safety programs, documents and training programs
- Take ownership and constantly look for ways to improve Safety Performance. Host and conduct daily tailgate safety talks and monthly safety meetings, documenting as required.
- Report and investigate all near misses / incidents / accidents resulting in personal injury and or property damage.
- Ensure the inspection and maintenance program for equipment / machinery in the facility is being followed and coordinate repairs and replacements as necessary.
- Provide guidance and performance management to staff
- Monitor and maintain staff training records.
- Assists the Operations Manager and performs some of the managerial duties in their absence
- Ability to read, calculate and understand all reports from regulations, engineers, etc. in relation to liquid and industrial waste transfer and processing facilities.
- Ensure all visitors to the site (Contractors, Brokers, etc.) are complying with site and corporate safety policies.
- Maintain and implement new facility standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
- Participates in developing spill reporting regulations and environmental damage assessment programs.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies :
- 7+ year of progressive experience in a similar industry (experience and understanding of industrial and liquid waste industry preferred) including a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or operations management role
- Degree or diploma in a chemistry based t echnical or e ngineering field
- Extensive knowledge of TDG, Ontario Reg. 347 and Ontario Health and Safety Act
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills b oth written and verbal .
- Possess superior organizational and people management skills of large teams
- Emergency response availability including evenings and weekends
- Proficient computer skills that must include Microsoft Office suite.
- Flexible to work extended hours
- Must be able to utilize required personal protective equipment (hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators , safety footwear)
- Able to work outdoors, exposed to the ambient weather conditions
- Valid G License with a good driver abstract / CVOR abstract
