Payroll & Benefits Specialist
Our client is seeking a Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join their team in Fort Saskatchewan. The successful candidate will be accountable for the full cycle of payroll processing as well as oversight and administration of benefits programs.
This role is focused on pay policy administration and application, and health and wellness-related benefits.
Your success will be defined by your ability to :
- Coordinate with internal clients to independently manage the processing of salary and hourly payrolls, including incentive pay and year-end processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness.
- Prepare payroll-related filings and supporting documentation, such as year-end tax statements, Records of Employment, WCB returns and other statements.
- Lead and execute the full cycle of payroll including accounting entries, taxable benefits, hourly premiums and overtime record keeping aligning with applicable pay policies and best practices.
- Apply changes impacting pay appropriately including leave of absence, new hires, departures, deductions, etc. as required.
- Administer federal and provincial filings including CPP, EI and income tax to remain compliant with all regulations; maintain accurate record keeping for audit purposes.
- Prepare and submit detailed reports on payroll activities and discrepancies.
- Administer health, dental and savings plan benefits
- Proactively monitor insurance coverage, dental, disability and savings plans to ensure they are maintained and in compliance with relevant legislative and internal procedural requirements.
- Coordinate the annual renewal and review of health and dental benefits, make plan recommendations considering cost and value in consultation with the HR Manager and participate in associated benchmarking to assess competitiveness.
- Coordinates and facilitates onsite employee information sessions and / or creates materials advocating health, dental and saving plans as appropriate.
- Champions health and wellness initiatives for the organization
- Participates in special projects as assigned. This could include but is not limited to HRIS, support of the HR team with preparation of correspondence, vacation coverage and additional special projects as required.
- Continuously improves processes and systems related to payroll and benefit administration.
- All other duties as assigned.
Your strengths include :
- Post-secondary education and a payroll designation are considered an asset.
- Thorough knowledge of payroll & benefits compliance and administration.
- Experience and exposure to salaried and hourly-based payroll.
- Solution-oriented to resolve complex payroll inquiries.
- Able to interpret and explain payroll legislation.
- Previous experience in benefit administration in a hands-on role.
- Must have a high attention to detail, be a key critical thinker and be committed to continuous improvement.
- Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be comfortable with computer applications, particularly MS Excel, and payroll processing applications / systems such as Dayforce and possess an aptitude for creating, managing and interpreting data.
