Hybrid Work Model :

BCNU’s core hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 9 : 00am to 5 : 00pm. Staff are employed as office-based employees, with hybrid work arrangements when possible.

BCNU provides standard equipment for remote working and reimburses up to $35 per month for home internet expenses to employees.

SUMMARY

As part of the senior management team, the Director, Finance (the Director ) is responsible for working with the Provincial Treasurer to create and ensure the implementation of a finance strategy externally and internally.

The Director reports to the Executive Director, Operations and works with the senior leadership team.

The Director is also responsible for leading, directing and motivating staff within their department / s and / or within the organization.

The Director is also responsible for maximizing finance technology for the benefit of the union and the members.

Results are accomplished by :

Planning, developing and constantly improving all finance systems in response to the changing needs of the organization;

serving as an in-house expert in finance; including the maximization of finance technology.

  • Supporting staff in the effective and efficient operations of the finance department, including training and development of staff.
  • Directing the work of consultants and contractors working on strategic priorities related to finance systems and special projects.

Assists BCNU with investment management issues, as appropriate.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

The role of the Director is multifaceted, combining significant leadership and professional responsibilities :

Strategy :

  • Develops and executes a comprehensive strategic finance plan (both external and internal) supporting the strategic directions and objectives of the Union.
  • Incorporates the principles of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) throughout their work.
  • Promotes diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Execution :

  • Overall management and quality assurance related to finance procedures, including providing work direction to staff regarding appropriate assignments and performance.
  • Responsible for the provision of monthly financial statements, with full analysis and explanation.
  • Responsible for the annual budget and mid-year budget review, and analysis of same.
  • Monitors and works with the Provincial Treasurer and / or other Directors, of investment potentials for the BCNU financial portfolio.
  • Prepares for and assists the appointed external auditors in the annual audit of BCNU funds.
  • Implements internal controls recommended by auditors.

Networks and influence :

  • Communicating with elected officials, including BCNU Council.
  • Providing support to the Provincial Treasurer for member meetings, including the BCNU annual Convention.
  • May represent BCNU at various tables including HEABC and Ministry of Health.
  • Participates significantly in costings related to NBA bargaining and internal staff bargaining.

Leadership :

  • Participates in decision making around the overall goals of the organization.
  • Hiring staff, conducting staff evaluations, imposing discipline up to and including termination.
  • Provides support to Regional Treasurers, organizes and oversees the regional record review, in consultation with the Provincial Treasurer.
  • Provides support, education, and training to senior staff regarding internal finance and budgeting processes.

Mentorship :

  • Provides mentorship to members of their team ensuring staff satisfaction, retention and growth.
  • May provide mentorship to other elected members or members in general (e.g. Treasurers, Stewards, Regional Executive).

Data and reporting :

  • Works closely with senior Human Resources staff managing payroll systems and benefits programs.
  • Works closely with the IT Department to ensure appropriate integration of data and information.

Budget and financial :

  • Provides input into budget.
  • Assists in the coordination of the annual Planning session, and dissemination of plans to staff and members.
  • Makes recommendations to Council where necessary on matters within his / her jurisdiction.
  • May provide financial advice pertaining to pension matters and investment portfolios.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Professional Certifications

A CPA designation.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Several years’ experience in a non-profit, or similar organization including at least 5 years in leadership positions.
  • A strategic thinker with the ability to improve finance systems, manage projects from concept to completion, maintaining quality standards and meeting Council and member expectations throughout.

Demonstrated ability to lead staff.

  • Demonstrates and leads a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing reconciliation, cultural safety, and redressing the harms of indigenous-specific racism.
  • Ability to provide and implement successorship training and planning.
  • Ability to be innovative and solution focused.
  • Travel will be required for this position.
