Assistant Brewer
Description :
Executing and / or assisting in day-to-day brewery operations with a strong desire to learn and willingness to work hard.
The assistant brewer will report directly to our Head Brewer and will be actively involved in all facets of the day-to-day operation.
Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to :
As we experience seasonal shifts due to weather and tourism, weekly tasks will change based on seasonal adjustments. The Assistant Brewer will assist the Head Brewer with all brewery tasks :
- Operation, cleaning, sanitization, organization & general maintenance of : Packaging equipment (canning and kegging lines), brewhouse and cellar, Tanks, hoses, other equipment, draft system and lines
- Assisting with brewing related issues, projects
- Milling, mashing, boiling, heat exchange & transfers, fermentation management, pilot batches
- Fermentation monitoring, yeast management, dry hopping, transfers, CIP’s, carbonation, quality control
- Receiving raw ingredients
- Basic brewhouse operation
- Quality assurance
- Cellar work including beer transfer, filtration, and carbonation
- Operating keg washer
- Cleaning, sanitation, and maintenance of brewhouse equipment and cellars
- Sanitizing of tanks, filter equipment, hoses, etc
- Kegging, canning, labelling, keg washing, line cleaning & maintenance
- Draft system maintenance and cleaning
- Record keeping
- General cleaning and organization
- Pallet unloading & delivery help
- Assisting with spent grain disposal
- Event work (Beer festivals, local markets)
- Safe use of hand trucks, pallet jacks and all brewery equipment
- Safe use of brewery chemicals
- Proper handling of chemicals required for sanitization and cleaning of equipment
- Understanding and practicing all internal safety standards
Requirements :
- Passion for all things Craft Beer with a focus on the local community
- Strong work ethic & ability to work well under pressure
- Ability to work both independently and within a team, with minimal supervision
- Ability to be on feet all day and able to lift 55+ lbs regularly & in repetition
- Comfortable working with chemicals and willingness to adhere to safety, environmental and brewhouse standards at all times
- Good troubleshooting skills, and strong mechanical / electrical aptitude
- Employee will be required to obtain a forklift license as well as First Aid and WHIMS Training
- Employee will be required to work weekends and other flexible hours
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- 3+ years previous experience at a brewery as an assistant brewer, brewer, or cellarman is preferred
- Degree or background in biology, chemistry or engineering is a bonus but not required
