We are looking for a smart, passionate, and purpose-driven individual to join our team.

Cybera is a not-for-profit agency whose mission is to improve the lives of Albertans through the use and advancement of technology, digital literacy, and digital best practices.

We operate Alberta’s research and education IP network, host a free public cloud for researchers and pre / non-commercial exploration, and run a variety of programs that provide group IT buying, champion skill growth, enhance cyber security, and advocate for a better and more equitable digital future.

In this role we are looking for a senior systems administrator with the experience or desire to lead other technologists.

The role will include initiatives such as : helping create the infrastructure for a regional security operations centre, managing OpenStack environments, and growing AWS expertise to support in-house developed applications.

This will also include supporting a variety of the infrastructure and services that Cybera uses every day to carry out our mission! You will also mentor other team members in best practices, approaches, and technologies to help elevate the team's overall capability.

We will ask you to

Be comfortable wearing multiple hats :

  • Acting as a technical lead for projects.
  • Be willing to swap hard drives in the morning and then back to leveraging.
  • infrastructure as code for the same project that afternoon.
  • Share your experience in order to support the growth of others!

Act as a strategist :

  • Understand the direction of a project, the requirements and constraints, and guide the technology to best fit.
  • Provide architectural decisions affecting service delivery, scalability, and disaster recovery.
  • Assist with budgeting, planning, and purchasing equipment.
  • Maintain relationships with the external stakeholders both in and outside of the technology space.

Work with teams and on your own :

  • Effectively delegate and mentor others.
  • Learn, document, and share new knowledge and skills with your team.
  • Debug complex problems and share your approach.
  • Review repeating issues and problems, suggest fixes, and work with your team to implement improvements.
  • Encourage constant review and improvement of processes.
  • Build trust between Cybera’s partners as well as colleagues within the organization.
  • Ensure sufficient documentation exists.
  • Be part of a compensated on-call rotation for applicable projects you are part of.

As a requirement, your professional toolkit should be well stocked with :

  • Expert understanding of Linux and virtualization.
  • Expert troubleshooting skills with both hardware and software.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

We would also love to see experience or an interest in :

  • Scripting languages which include shell scripting as well as one higher level language such as Python.
  • Monitoring and metering concepts and experience with one or more popular monitoring and metering services.
  • Relational Databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Cloud Platforms such as Kubernetes, OpenStack, and AWS.
  • Configuration Management Systems such as Puppet and Ansible.
  • Application Architecture Basics.

Some of the technologies you will encounter in your day-to-day duties include :

Compensation and Location :

This position is based in either our Calgary or Edmonton office. Salary will be commensurate with experience. No relocation costs will be awarded.
