Lab Aide - Pathology
Job Description
Accountabilities :
- Laboratory reception welcomes and assists visitors / vendors / couriers at the reception desk
- Pathology specimen (e.g. blocks, slides) reception, packaging and dispatch
- Retrieval of blocks and slides for review, rounds, consults and clinical trials
- Requests to the pathologists for the selection of representative samples to be referred out
- Handles requests for pathology / cytology consults as per Laboratory protocol
- Documents disposition of referred out materials (material sent, date sent, date material returned) and routinely monitors for outstanding materials;
contacts referral lab to expedite return of materials
- Laboratory reports distribution
- Retrieves electronic reports and faxes to health care requesters as per Laboratory protocols
- Telephone assistance
- Aids in investigation of queries from laboratory personnel
- Files non-conformance reports as required
- Orders stock items and office supplies
- Services or arranges repairs for fax machines and multi-functional devices (i.e. photocopiers)
- Enters work orders for housekeeping, repairs, and other maintenance requests
- Updates manuals in Paradigm as assigned
- In-coming and out-going mail for Laboratory
- Other duties as assigned based on skill level, training and in accordance with departmental requirements
Qualifications
- Ontario secondary school graduation diploma
- Medical terminology course required
- Previous pathology experience is an asset
- Minimum two years recent experience in a hospital laboratory setting is preferred
- Proven excellence working in a team environment; strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain high levels of productivity, competence and professionalism
- Proven ability to perform duties independently or as a team member with high degree of motivation
- Previous experience with Meditech, Paradigm and Microsoft Office programs is an asset
- Proficiency with multi-functional devices ( / i.e. photocopier), fax machines and telephones
- Excellent customer service skills
- Strong multi-tasking and critical thinking skills
- Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record required
- May be required to travel between and work at all Osler sites in accordance with operational needs

Hours : Currently Days / Evenings / Nights, including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
