The Director, Professional Practice reports corporately to the Executive Director, PHSA Professional Practice and Policy Office and has matrix reporting into the senior leadership of a PHSA Program and Service.

The Director, Professional Practice, is accountable for providing strategic, operational and educational leadership for nursing and allied health professional practice across the designated PHSA program and service in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of the organization.

The Director Provides expert advice on nursing, allied health and the professional practice strategy for the portfolio, while ensuring the provision of high quality, evidenced-informed practices across their services.

Provides leadership, strategic direction and mentoring in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of nursing and allied health practice models, professional practice standards, evidence informed clinical practice, education training and ongoing professional growth.

Plays an integral part in defining and promoting quality of care processes and creating quality practice environments in collaboration with the quality director at the PHSA Program and Service.

Liaises, influences and consults with various stakeholders to develop, promote and advance interprofessional practice and education across the portfolio.

Develops working partnerships with other Health Authorities, the Ministry of Health, colleges, universities, professional associations and regulatory bodies to achieve the overall goals, objectives and operations of the PHSA program and service.

Supervises staff, develops and manages budgets and represents PHSA and the program and service professional practice regionally, provincially and nationally.

Specific Portfolio’s :

1. BC Centre of Disease Control The Director, Professional Practice, BCCDC has matrix reporting to the Senior Executive Director, Operations, BCCDC.

As a key member of the leadership team for Professional Practice this position is responsible to provide strategic, operational and educational leadership for nursing and allied health professional practice across BCCDC for a variety of Public Health practice issues and that is in alignment with the mission and strategic goals of BCCDC and PHSA.

Is accountable for the improvement or education projects related to public health nursing and allied health practice as well as to maintain an awareness of current public health practice trends and issues.

2. BC Cancer The Director, Professional Practice, BC Cancer reports directly to the Executive Director, Professional Practice and Policy Office, PHSA and works collaboratively with BC Cancer Operations and key partners within the program.

As a key member of the leadership team for Professional Practice, this position is responsible to provide strategic, operational and educational leadership for nursing and allied health professional practice across BC Cancer for a variety of oncology related practice issues and that is in alignment with the mission and strategic goals of BC Cancer and PHSA.

Is accountable for the improvement, clinical practice and education projects related to oncology nursing and allied health practice as well as to maintain an awareness of current oncology

What you’ll do

Direct the Professional Practice operational activities and provincial projects ensuring consistency with the mission and strategic plan of PHSA and the designated Program and Service.

Direct the day-to-day operation of Professional Practice activities including setting priorities and determining related deadlines for work completion, coordination, monitoring, tracking and reporting on activities.

  • Lead Professional Practice staff through coaching, guiding and modeling key behaviours / strategies, encouraging dialogue and providing guidance and advice to facilitate resolutions to work issues.
  • Collaborate with and facilitate consensus with the organization Senior Practice Leads, Operational Leaders, PHSA partners, designated portfolio programs and other organizations on a variety of Public Health practice issues.
  • Provide expertise and facilitation in implementing and evaluating evidence-based clinical decision support tools such as protocols, care paths, structured improvement collaboratives.
  • Initiate strategies to improve products, services and work processes using principles of continuous quality improvement (CQI) to promote the delivery of high quality professional practice services.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of professional practice plans, goals and objectives by providing feedback and / or recommendations to the Executive Director.
  • Collaborate with and facilitate consensus within the portfolio’s Senior Practice Leads, Operational Leaders, PHSA partners, programs and other organizations on a variety of Public Health practice issues.
  • Co-lead / participate in the communities of practice to build a shared domain of interest of the members, have an engaged group of members, and as a team develop standards of practice and care.

What you bring

Qualifications :

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in an applicable professional or related discipline and ten to fifteen (10-15) years of progressively increasing leadership responsibility in a complex health care or academic health sciences environment.

Current practicing registration with an applicable regulatory body such as the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) or BC College of Social Workers (BCCSW).

  • Broad knowledge of interprofessional practice and education, and models of care delivery across a variety of disciplines and settings.
  • Broad knowledge of research processes and methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish objectives and goals in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, interpersonal, decision-making and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically analyze industry and professional literature.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize creativity and innovation to develop corporate strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop quality assessment systems / tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of collective agreements, applicable legislation as well as principles of union / management relationships.
  • Understanding of various reports including Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), In Plain Sight, Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Model and support full team commitment to Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrate humility and heart-led leadership.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Role Specific Qualifications :

BC Centre of Disease Control Broad knowledge of professional practice and nursing and skills required for public health programs and a patient and family centered model of care.

Comprehensive knowledge of public health professional practice issues and future directions for public health professional practice at the provincial and national levels.

BC Cancer Broad knowledge of professional practice and nursing and allied health and skills required for oncology programs and a patient and family centered model of care.

Comprehensive knowledge of oncology professional practice issues and future directions for oncology care at the provincial and national levels.

Salary Range : $128,298 - $184,428 per year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan.

Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.

Location : This position can be associated / located in proximity of any of the 6 regional cancer centres.
