Position Description

The Control Systems Engineer will be responsible for the execution of critical tasks related to the implementation of Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS).

They will be mentored by a senior member of the Controls Engineering team and will develop an in-depth understanding of all components of the BESS and how they affect the overall outcomes of the control system.

Key responsibilities include :

• Participate in the implementation of the electrical system architecture including instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, networking, power distribution and protection, according to requirements.
• Develop code using Jython, Python, Codesys or other similar structured text-based programming languages.
• Test and verify the correct operation of controls system code utilizing test bench, physical hardware, or field testing.

Develop tools required to verify functionality. Provide test reports and documentation.

• Implement and utilize revision control systems.
• Develop local monitoring and control interfaces.
• Develop remote monitoring and control architecture. Work with IT specialists to implement cloud-based architectures.
• Collaborate with other project members to test and commission BESS, either remotely, at the factory, or in the field.
• Develop documentation to ensure all aspects of control system development is preserved.
• Working with Product Managers, determine feasibility of new features and capabilities.
• Analyze data collected from BESS for the purposes of performance evaluation and remote diagnostics.
• Participate in system FAT and commissioning services to ensure smooth and trouble-free operation of deployed BESS units.

Required Qualifications

• Technical diploma / degree from a registered post secondary institution in an Electrical, Software, Controls, or related discipline.
• 1-5 years demonstrable control software experience (Codesys-based programming languages and structured text considered an asset).
• Experience with DC systems ranging from 48 to 1500VDC.
• Knowledge of NEC, CEC, UL9540 and NFPA 855 standards.
• Knowledge of inverter, converter, rectifier systems.
• Knowledge of energy storage devices (electrochemical batteries, flow cells, fuel cells, CAES, etc.)
• Ability to work within critical project timelines with minimal supervision.
• Willingness to travel worldwide to support project delivery.
• Possess the ability to adapt and learn new concepts and technologies quickly.
• Willing and able to exercise the authority entrusted in order to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
