Duties

This position involves providing engineering advice and technical recommendations on railway line construction, railway disputes related to crossings, noise and vibration issues, and net salvage valuations.

These recommendations are communicated through written reports and oral briefings. Additionally, the role requires fostering consultative and collaborative working relationships with colleagues as well as internal and external stakeholders.

Intent of the process

This process is to staff an indeterminate position. A pool of qualified candidates will be created to staff future positions with various tenures (indeterminate, determinate, deployment, acting, and assignment / secondment) with similar requirements, various language requirements and profiles and various security requirements.

Results of this staffing process may be used for similar positions in the Agency and other departments and agencies in the federal government.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION :

A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering or another engineering field related to the duties of the position.

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION :

Eligibility for a Canadian engineering designation with specialization in an engineering field related to the duties of the position.

EXPERIENCE :

Significant* and recent experience in leading simultaneously multiple initiatives, cases, significant tasks or projects requiring completion under fixed deadlines.

Significant* and recent experience in analyzing a high level of complex qualitative and quantitative information leading to providing evidence-based recommendations to senior management on technical related issues.

Experience in maintaining consultative and collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Significant is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities which could normally be acquired over a period of approximately three (3) years or more.

Multiple is defined as leading as least four (4) initiatives, cases, tasks or projects simultaneously.

Complex is defined as including the following characteristics : multidimensional, multiple or conflicting information to be analyzed.

Senior management is defined as Director General / equivalent or higher.

Recent experience refers to within the last five years.

ASSET EDUCATION :

Master's degree or PhD in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.

ASSET EXPERIENCES :

Experience in the design or construction or maintenance or inspection of railway infrastructure projects.

Experience working in an administrative tribunal.

Experience in working in a federal or provincial department in engineering-related duties.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS :

Willingness and ability to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail and air.

Willing to work in the office on short notice.

Willingness and ability to work overtime, when required.
