The Opportunity :

Underthe delegation of a Supervising Physician, the role of the Physician Assistant(PA) will be to help coordinate, provide, and evaluate care of patientsregistered in the CGMH Emergency Department.

Primaryresponsibilities involve assessing and managing medium to high acuity complexpatients that may require admission as well as low acuity patients.

ThePhysician Assistant is expected to work reasonably independently with goodclinical intuition however, will review each case with the staff physician.

Staff physician involvement in each patient case will vary depending on thecomplexity of the patient the Physician Assistant is expected to work with thepace and clinical acumen that contributes both to ED eficiency and excellentcare for each patient.

Leads Emergency Department physician education inMeditech Expanse and undertakes improvement initiatives related to workflowprocesses.

ThePhysician Assistant will be a lead care provider for our innovative ED FastTrack and will complete daily ED call backs to ensure that abnormal lab andimaging findings are followed up accordingly.

Qualifications :

  • Must have a Bachelor of Science Degree (PhysicianAssistant), Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant Degree, or Canadian ForcesHealth Services Physician Assistant Baccalaureate degree required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Emergencymedicine and the Emergency Department patient.
  • Knowledge of Physician Assistant Scopeof Practice, Delegation of Controlled Acts, and Medical Directives.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislative andpolicy requirements applicable to the organization.
  • Excellent time management,communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated abilities in problemsolving, team building, conflict resolution, decision-making, managing change,and group process.
  • Strong computer skills and technologicalaptitude.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Function effectively as a physicianextender to provide optimal, ethical patient centered care.
  • Manage medium to high acuity patientincluding patients who may require admission as well as low-acuity patients inour See and Treat area.
  • Apply clinical knowledge appropriate tocare of ED patients assessed as CTAS level 4 and 5, with some CTAS level 3patients as per established criteria.
  • Work as a lead medical provider in ourinnovative ED Fast Track Program
  • Seek appropriate consultation from thesupervising physician and other health professionals.
  • Perform a complete and appropriateassessment of patients and formulate a differential diagnosis and clinicaltreatment plan through interviews, histories, and physical examinations.
  • Provide education to patients, families,and other health care professionals as appropriate to the clinical setting.
  • Facilitate coordination of theinterdisciplinary team via referrals to appropriate health care providersauthorized by the supervising physician.
  • Active participation in the Hospital’sHealth and Safety Internal Responsibility System, which includes maintainingaccountability for the defined responsibilities listed in applicablelegislation, policies and procedures.
  • Actively contributes within the scope ofthe position to the enhancement of the patient experience through continuousimprovement, learning, and teamwork, with the goal of creating an environmentthat is caring, inclusive, respectful, patient and family-centred with a focuson excellence, innovation and safety.
