HEAD OF ENGINEERING -Cambridge, ON
An international group focused on designing, manufacturing and integrating specialized computing platforms and complex systems for industries requiring high levels of reliability and performance for critical, certified, and / or challenging applications. We enable organization’s across multiple sectors to deploy innovative and complex technical solutions to meet their operational objectives via specialized computers, tablets, complex electro-mechanical systems and smart edge IoT platforms. We are industry and application agnostic and operate across seven core sectors of defense, healthcare, energy, communications, automation, transport and leisure.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Manage technical services team, distributed through multiple locations.
- Organize and structure the department to best deliver technical services to internal and external stakeholders and for future scaling in line with the Company’s growth forecasts. This will require reviewing the structure at each location but also establishing a structure that supports a group offering.
- At some locations, establishing and growing a technical services team will be required to meet the business growth ambitions.
- Engagement with Sales, Operations, Finance, ITC, Security and HR to support the business objectives.
- Management, work planning, scheduling and review of work, as appropriate to deliver function specific outputs and defined milestones to business stakeholders.
- Definition, setting, monitoring and management of Objective and Key Results (OKRs) for the department, teams and individuals.
- Maintaining and tracking team related OKRs and reporting status to the Management Team.
- Participation in the setting of the group and department budget and managing to budget with monthly reviews.
- Provision of leadership for the maintenance of appropriate levels of discipline, monitored controls and correction to maintain consistency to brand values, culture and work schedule.
- Regular review and management of the Skills Matrix mix required to ensure the department has the appropriate and proportionate skills, capabilities, and capacity required to deliver business objectives.
- Management of skills gaps through recruitment, training and performance management.
- Mentoring, coaching and provisioning of constructive feedback to department staff.
- Team communications, morale and culture are suitable to minimize churn.
- Regular reporting of progress updates and resource utilization to the business stakeholders.
- Management and technical oversight of multiple concurrent multi-disciplinary projects with weekly review, prioritizing and reporting, resulting in on-time and on-budget completion across the group.
- Management and technical oversight of design reviews and key milestones to ensure quality standards are maintained across the group.
- Oversee feasibility analysis, project scoping, resource planning and cost estimating for project activities.
- Management of compliance and certification through collaboration with the quality departments.
- Management of actions, issues, risks, opportunities, dependencies through the project duration.
- Analysis of lessons learnt and improvement actions. Lessons learnt should be shared across the group to ensure continuous improvement
- Management and sign-off of contractual, technical change control, customer acceptance and staged invoicing of NRE deliverables.
- Architecture and design authority responsibility for solutions and products from inception to end of life.
- Oversee and approve the technical output of the department ensuring compliance with the customer’s requirements and specifications and appropriate regulatory requirements.
- Ensuring designs are optimized (i.e. not excessively over or under engineered). Systems design for purpose, reliability and manufacturability. Share reference designs across the group where possible.
- Oversee design reviews of developments activities, apply best practice knowhow at agreed stages and sign off designs, specifications and documentation.
- Provide subject matter expertise from across the group team for engineering design in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic and Software engineering as appropriate.
- Provide subject matter expertise from across the group team for standardization of parts and material selection used in end product realization.
- Maintain best in class subject matter expertise, coordinating knowledge sharing, technical training and support to meet the business objectives.
- Ensure smooth NPI handover to production, including BOM, build instructions, training and ongoing support.
- Manage obsolescence and alternative material selection in collaboration with purchasing.
- Control and separation of existing and newly created IPR in all aspects of design and documentation.
- Prepare and manage scalability through outsourcing to meet the business needs.
- Customer facing involvement in the promotion of the business and in improved understanding of current and future customer technology needs and requirements.
- Delivery of Opportunity Support Requests (OSRs) on time and to agreed standards.
- Foster and facilitate product ideas from across the business, customers, suppliers and partners.
- Preparation and review of product business cases in collaboration with other stakeholders, to include competition, target customers, return on investment, commercial model options and internationalization. From inception to the end of life.
- Participation in the promotion of technical value proposition to prospects and customers.
- Validation and sign-off of NRE estimations from across the Company.
- Validation of materials and production labour estimates.
- Input and collaboration on product pricing, sales product training, marketing input content and performance management.
- Products lifecycle management in keeping with business objectives and market focus.
- Responsibility for Technical Services processes ensuring that all staff members adhere to the ISO-9001 based Business Management System (BMS) processes and procedures.
- Continuous enhancement of documentation and control of processes in keeping with ISO-9001 requirements and with business best practices.
- Ensure that quality and reliability are at the forefront of everything the team delivers.
- Ensure that design for manufacture and test are key considerations in Technical Services outputs.
- Maintenance of BMS, Password and Risk registers in accordance with BMS processes.
