Nova Scotia Teachers UnionHalifax, Nova Scotia, CanadaThe Nova Scotia Teachers Union (NSTU) is a dynamic organization dedicated to unifying and elevating the teaching profession while advocating for quality education across the province. With over 10,000 active members, including public school teachers (Primary to Grade 12), teacher specialists, and Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority teachers, the NSTU operates through a collaborative structure of representatives, district Locals, regional councils, and over 20 professional associations. Governed by a 23-member Provincial Executive and supported by dedicated staff, the NSTU works closely with key partners to amplify the voices of educators and drive meaningful change in Nova Scotia’s education system.
The Opportunity
The NSTU is looking for its next Executive Director who will have the extraordinary opportunity to shape the lives of teachers and students across Nova Scotia.
Working closely with the Provincial Executive and NSTU staff, you will directly influence the education system by advocating for policies that elevate their profession, empowering teachers and enhancing the classroom experience for countless children. Your work will go beyond managing operations and labour relations; it will be about leaving a lasting legacy by ensuring that every teacher feels supported and is equipped to inspire the next generation of learners.
The impact you make will resonate far beyond the walls of the classroom, advancing and improving the future of education in the province. This is your chance to be a leader in an organization that is committed to creating real, positive change for both educators and students.
If you are motivated by purpose-driven work and are eager to make a profound impact within the education system in Nova Scotia, this is the role that allows you to do just that.
You Will be Responsible For :
- Strategic leadership, governance, and organizational and financial oversight
- Labour relations and contract negotiation
- Government relations and advocacy
- Member services and support
- Communication and public relations
- Staff leadership and development
- Crisis management and problem solving
The Ideal Candidate
With a strong track record of progressively senior experience within an education setting, you thrive in complex, multi-partner environments. You are open-minded and collaborative, and you value diverse perspectives, foster strong teams, and ensure strategic objectives are met. You are skilled in staff development, resource management, and budgetary oversight and you are decisive with a track record of building transparent, productive relationships.
You are an advocate for public education and teachers and possess an in-depth knowledge of labour relations and public policy. Additionally, you have relevant experience and knowledge that would apply within the Nova Scotia education system. Experienced in complex contract negotiations and government relations, you navigate challenges with diplomacy and integrity. Your superior communication skills and ability to facilitate consensus make you a trusted leader. You are a strategic, forward thinker who drives organizational success while managing crises with composure. Your strong organizational skills enable you to balance multiple priorities, while your adaptability helps you build rapport with key partners. Additionally, you are eligible to meet the teaching licensing requirements for the Province of Nova Scotia.
