The successful candidate must currently hold an academic appointment at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor and be eligible to hold a clinical appointment at a hospital fully affiliated with the University . The appointment as Labatt Family Chair will be for a 5-year term effective November 1, 2025, or shortly thereafter, renewable for a second term following a favourable review.
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto is a thriving community of undergraduate medical students, MSc and PhD students, residents, fellows and faculty members. With over 900 faculty members training over 200 residents and more than 50 research and clinical fellows, it is the largest department of psychiatry in Canada and one of the largest in the world. The Department integrates the perspectives of diverse institutions, collaborating and innovating with 20 hospital partners, including 8 Toronto Academic Health Science Network (TASHN) fully-affiliated sites, 4 TASHN associate-affiliated sites and 8 community sites across Ontario. Clinician investigators and clinician / PhD scientists are distributed in, and supported by, the affiliated hospitals and other training sites. Faculty members have an academic home in one of the Department’s 7 academic divisions, which together with the Global Mental Health Program, reflect key research themes : Adult Psychiatry & Health Systems; Child & Youth Mental Health; Consultation / Liaison Psychiatry; Forensic Psychiatry; Geriatric Psychiatry; Psychotherapy, Humanities & Psychosocial Interventions; Neurosciences & Clinical Translation. From among its faculty, 47 hold chairs and professorships : 6 University endowed chairs, 26 University-hospital chairs, 11 Canada Research Chairs and 4 professorships. The Department has developed processes to identify and support the next generation of researchers—from medical students (summer training), to residents (a renewed Clinician Scientist Program, a new Clinician Scholar Program and a new Clinician Researcher Track) and to fellows and assistant professors (with the Academic Scholar Awards and multiple internal seed and pilot funding opportunities). The Department is a leader in teaching and education scholarship, with the largest psychiatry residency program in North America. Graduate and postdoctoral training by faculty members also play a large role in advancing research in the Department through the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies , with Temerty Faculty of Medicine’s Institute of Medical Science providing much of the training. The Department works to incorporate diverse perspectives and bridge the gap between education, research and practice—expanding awareness of the wide range of experiences of those living with mental illness. It seeks to include the perspectives and advice of patients and to reflect the diversity of its patient population.
In addition to being a scholar, experienced clinician, educator and innovator, the successful candidate must be an effective communicator with a track record of collaborative and inclusive leadership. The candidate must demonstrate a deep understanding and track record of interprofessional and multidisciplinary collaboration. To lead the Department distributed across affiliated hospitals, the Labatt Family Chair will bring a record of excellence in research, education and / or creative professional activity. They will possess outstanding leadership, management and communication skills, as well as the operational experience to manage tensions and conflicts. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy-informed problem solving and transparency are necessary to cultivate collaborative relationships in the public and private sectors. Effective strategies are required to build and sustain national and international partnerships and collaborations.
The Labatt Family Chair will bring both an inclusive and unifying vision and demonstrated experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective environments. The Labatt Family Chair will have knowledge and understanding of the diversity of trainees, faculty and the communities in the Greater Toronto Area. They will be deeply committed to implementing the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity and accessibility (EDIIA) and professional values—in teaching, mentorship, research collaborations, faculty development, alumni engagement and developing and implementing a vision for the future of the Department. With equity-driven leadership, the Labatt Family Chair will oversee the promotion and implementation of strategic priorities; recruitment, development, mentorship and retention of faculty; collaborations with internal and external partners; and education and research programs in the city-wide Department. Experience with hospital funding models, successful fundraising and alumni relationship-building will be assets. The Labatt Family Chair will provide strategic leadership in fostering a strong administrative structure to support the Department’s priorities and operational excellence. The successful candidate must have the vision and ability to take the Department of Psychiatry to an even higher level of academic achievement and recognition.
