Description de poste

The Opportunity :

Our client, an innovative company with a diverse and growing intellectual property (IP) portfolio, is building a dedicated IP team to protect its rights through patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret strategies. They are seeking a Mid-Level Intellectual Property Lawyer with 2–3 years of experience to support these critical initiatives.

This is an exciting opportunity for an IP professional to work closely with inventors, technical teams, and business leaders, shaping the company’s IP strategy while managing a dynamic portfolio of intellectual property assets.

What You’ll Be Doing :

  • Collaborate with inventors, creators, and technical teams to draft, file, and prosecute patent and trademark applications.
  • Conduct prior art and trademark clearance searches, draft responses to office actions, and manage an assigned docket of IP matters.
  • Maintain and organize the company’s IP portfolio, ensuring compliance with Canadian and international regulations and deadlines.
  • Conduct preliminary infringement and validity analyses for patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
  • Assist in enforcement actions, including preparing or reviewing legal documentation for litigation or dispute resolution.
  • Work with outside counsel and internal stakeholders during hearings, discovery, and alternative dispute resolution phases.
  • Partner with R&D, engineering, and business teams to identify and protect innovations, branding, and creative works, aligning with overall company objectives.
  • Provide internal stakeholders with clear legal advice on IP-related issues, risks, and strategies.
  • Stay current on changes in Canadian IP law, international treaties, and relevant case law.
  • Contribute to broader IP strategy, including competitive landscape analysis, risk assessments, and global IP considerations.

What You’ll Need to Be Successful :

  • Law degree from a recognized Canadian law school.
  • Admission to the Law Society of British Columbia (must be in good standing).
  • Qualification in another jurisdiction (e.g., the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office) is a plus but not required.
  • 2–3 years of experience in intellectual property law, including patent and / or trademark prosecution and enforcement.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting applications, responding to office actions, and managing prosecution deadlines.
  • Exposure to IP litigation, enforcement procedures, or alternative dispute resolution is highly valued.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a scientific, technical, or creative field is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate complex technical or creative concepts.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to translate technical and legal concepts into actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, deadlines, and managing multiple priorities.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience coordinating with external counsel or managing external legal resources.
  • Understanding of international treaties and agreements (e.g., the Patent Cooperation Treaty, Madrid Protocol).
  • Strong research skills and adaptability to evolving legal and business landscapes.
