Who we need We are looking for a Planning Technician to support school board accommodation planning through data analysis, mapping and development tracking. You will review official plans, zoning by-laws and municipal planning applications to assess their impact on school accommodations and help identify solutions. This is a full-time position operating within a hybrid work environment. What’s in it for you? Exposure. Gather and assess demographic, economic, and land-use data to support school facility planning and forecasting. Develop maps. Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to create and update maps illustrating school boundaries, enrolment patterns, and land-use impacts. Prepare reports. Draft comment letters, presentations, and technical reports for school boards and municipal stakeholders. Maintain databases. Track school facilities, enrolment projections, and development applications to inform decision-making. Review planning applications. Assess official plans, zoning by-laws, subdivision plans, and development proposals to evaluate their impact on school accommodations. Support planning processes. Assist in preparing schedules, tracking budgets, and identifying risks and mitigation strategies. You have : Education and experience. A degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or a related field, with academic, internship, or work experience in municipal planning and data management. You have a strong understanding of Ontario’s geographic landscape, municipal development approvals, and key legislation such as the Planning Act and the Education Act. Technical skills. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software is an asset. Analytical thinking. You approach problems with an engineering mindset, using logic, knowledge, and quantitative analysis skills. You have experience analyzing complex planning documents and data to assess impacts and provide recommendations. Communication skills. You excel at conveying complex information clearly and effectively. You have experience drafting technical reports and comment letters, translating data and planning insights into concise, actionable recommendations. You build trust and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including school boards, municipal officials, and the public. Accountability. You excel in a self-driven work environment, managing multiple projects with competing deadlines. You are detail-oriented, ensuring accuracy and quality in all aspects of your work.
