Job description

Stella-Jones is a leading manufacturer of essential infrastructure products focused on serving utilities and railroads, as well as supplying big box home improvement stores across North America. Headquartered in Montreal, Canada and publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Stella-Jones operates a vast network of facilities that employs more than 3,000 employees across the United States and Canada. Built on strong foundations with a coast-to-coast reach, we offer real opportunities for career success and community impact.

Position Summary

Stella-Jones is seeking a hands-on Health & Safety Advisor to support day-to-day safety activities at one of our operational sites. This role is embedded in the operation and works closely with plant leadership, employees, and contractors to promote a strong safety culture through visibility, collaboration, and practical solutions.

This is a true business-partner role — focused on coaching, supporting, and enabling safe work practices rather than policing. You will play a key role in developing site-level procedures, strengthening programs, and helping the operation grow safely as the business continues to expand.

Key Responsibilities

Site Oversight & Engagement

  • Maintain a strong on-site presence and serve as a key point of contact for health and safety.
  • Conduct regular yard and plant inspections, safety walkthroughs, and audits.
  • Perform spot checks of Powered Industrial Equipment (PIE) operations and PPE compliance.
  • Proactively engage in operational activities that may impact health and safety.

Programs, Procedures & Documentation

  • Develop, review, and maintain Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Lockout / Tagout (LOTO) programs.
  • Support site-level procedure development by breaking down tasks, identifying hazards, and recommending controls.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS), site safety manuals, and health & safety communication boards.
  • Manage PPE inventory and ordering.
  • Training, Coaching & Committees

  • Deliver new hire safety orientations and required training.
  • Support contractor onboarding and monitor compliance with safety standards.
  • Co-chair Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings and facilitate safety discussions.
  • Coach leaders and employees to integrate safety into daily operations.
  • Incident & Emergency Management

  • Coordinate and document emergency drills.
  • Lead incident and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Support injury claim management, return-to-work planning, and Workers’ Compensation follow-up.
  • Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor provincial health and safety legislation and ensure ongoing site compliance.
  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of health and safety programs.
  • Participate in professional development, safety training, and internal initiatives.
  • Qualifications

    Education & Certifications

  • Post-secondary education in Health & Safety, or a combination of education and experience.
  • CRSP, CHSC, or similar designation (preferred).
  • Additional certifications such as First Aid / CPR, WHMIS, Confined Space, or Train-the-Trainer are considered assets.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of health and safety experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or construction environment.
  • Experience working in unionized environments is an asset.
  • Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of provincial and federal occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Proven ability to identify hazards, assess risk, and implement controls.
  • Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel skills required); familiarity with safety management systems is an asset.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
  • As a Stella-Jones employee, you will enjoy access to excellent benefits and incentives, including :

  • Extended health and dental coverage
  • Life insurance and accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D)
  • Short-Term and Long-Term disability coverage
  • Competitive compensation
  • Annual Profit Share Program
  • Retirement program (RRSP) with generous Company match (150% of employee's 4% contribution)
  • Company Share Purchase Program with 25% Company contribution match
  • Career advancement opportunities
  • Stella-Jones is an equal opportunity employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind based on race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, genetic information, pregnancy, or any other protected characteristic as outlined by federal, provincial, or local laws.

This policy applies to all employment practices within our organization, including hiring, recruiting, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, leave of absence, compensation, benefits, training, and apprenticeship.
