Purpose
Reporting to the Manager, Rail Operations, the Rail Operations Specialist is an integral team member of Rocky Mountaineer’s Operations Centre. The Rail Operations Specialist is the central communication link between all departments involved in the movement of RM trains and coordination of yard switching.

This position is deemed safety sensitive. This position requires you to periodically access an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property or the environment.
Key Areas of Accountability
- Ensure the safe, efficient and on time performance of RM trains
- Ensure train consists support demand and facilitate job briefings to maximize yard efficiencies
- Coordinate optimal arrival and departure times of RM trains with other departments and stakeholders
- Communicate expected operating conditions with Train Manager and operational teams
- Serve as the primary liaison with rail partners, proving frequent operational updates
- Offer forecasts and updates based on rail assessments and partner communications
- Oversee the Operations Emergency Line, providing documentation of incidents and escalations when required
- Produce train performance reports, and continual train performance updates
Safety
Comply with all Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR), Transport Canada, General Operating Instructions (GOI) and all other safety policies, procedures & rulesIdentify, protect & report safety hazards to management & OH&S CommitteeMeet or exceed safety and security requirementsOperations
Support the successful execution of the Operating PlanLead the movements of RM trains & rail equipmentSupport with securing TGBOS and DOBS required for daily operationWill require the ability to train for and perform switching dutiesSupport operational and equipment availability requirementsSupport Operations and Mechanical requirements in the Operations CentreSupport EOC requirementsSupport operational targets and metricsMay be required to connect / disconnect HEP cablesQualifications
Education, Certification, Licenses
Post-secondary education in Business Administration or equivalent experienceAbility to train for and perform switching duties considered; an assetExperience / Skills
Advanced decision-making, problem solving, critical thinking skills in high pressure situationsExemplary communication skills in providing direction / correction to team membersProficient in core computer applications, with strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)Qualified Railroad - RTC, Locomotive Engineer, Conductor; an assetRailway operating experience; preferredSupervisory experience; an assetHigh attention to detail, with ability to manage competing prioritiesStrong time management, coordination and organizational skillsAbility to take personal accountability, be adaptable, and be a problem solverAbility to work cross-functionallyWork Environment
May require occasional travelRail industrial site that requires walking and sitting throughout the dayDaily operations consist of two shifts : Day shift (0530-1300) and Afternoon Shift (1300-2100).
