Job Summary

The ACE Research and Development Engineer will play a critical role in strengthening and expanding ACE’s aerodynamic development capabilities. This position requires strong proficiency in automotive aerodynamics, motorsports engineering, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with primary responsibilities centered on research, development, and industry-focused testing within ACE’s Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel (CAWT).

Key projects include developing and advancing ACE’s aerodynamic expertise, as well as leading the final commissioning, ongoing operation, and continuous improvement of ACE’s Moving Ground Plane (MGP) technology. The role will also support additional aerodynamic initiatives as driven by industry partners and research programs.

This position is highly integrated within ACE’s engineering operations and involves customer-facing testing, employee cross-training, academic learning, and direct participation in core engineering and technology development activities. Additional technical responsibilities include supporting the research, specification, and procurement of equipment and supplies; contributing to the development of operational protocols; and supporting industry, research, and outreach initiatives.

The role includes the design and setup of experimental test programs and participation in research and training activities within the ACE Integrated Research and Training Facilities. The role will also be involved in the operation of ACE’s major testing assets, including the climatic aerodynamic wind tunnel, model wind tunnels, climatic chambers, climatic 4-Poster, and the hemi-anechoic chamber multi-axis simulation table (MAST). The position requires the ability to develop and implement innovative solutions to meet the needs of an expanding and diverse range of market segments supported by ACE.

Required Skills

Technical Leadership, Operations, and Customer Engagement

The engineer will provide technical leadership, operational support, and guidance across a range of testing activities. Responsibilities include direct customer interaction, client management, and ensuring customer requirements are translated into effective test programs. The role requires a high level of professionalism and the ability to support both research-driven and industry-focused projects.

Aerodynamic Testing and Facility Operations

The primary technical focus of the role is vehicle aerodynamic measurement using a Moving Ground Plane and advanced aerodynamic instrumentation. In addition to MGP-based testing, the engineer will be responsible for the management, understanding, and operation of all ACE testing chambers, including the CAWT, Climate Chambers, 4-Poster, and MAST.

A detailed and practical understanding of supporting systems and equipment is required, including the Moving Ground Plane, force balances, instrumentation and data acquisition systems, and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) equipment.

Test Development, Instrumentation, and Engineering Support

The position will develop and execute tests and testing programs based on customer and research requirements. This includes supporting instrumentation selection and integration, engineering development of fixturing and interfaces, and ensuring test methods align with the technical capabilities of the facility. Responsibilities also include setting up vehicle and physical properties for testing and supporting vehicle- and facility-related technical issues throughout test execution.

Qualifications and Technical Expertise

This position is intended for a Research and Development Engineer (or EIT-eligible candidate) with demonstrated expertise in vehicle force measurement and the use of Moving Ground Plane systems. Experience in motorsport technology and innovation is essential, along with proficiency in automation, instrumentation controls, and programming. The role also includes identifying and supporting new business and research opportunities aligned with ACE’s capabilities.

Research, Development, and Market Support

Additional responsibilities may include the design and assembly of custom apparatus, development of innovative technical solutions, and improvement of existing systems. The role involves creating, designing, and building experimental solutions, mentoring students, and supporting broader research and development activities.
