Job description
  • Completion of Grade 12 or GED
  • Experience coaching or instructing small and large groups is required
  • Ability to teach progressive sport skill development

Assets:

  • NCCP - Community/Fundamental/Developmental sport-specific certification or equivalent
  • Current enrollment in or completion of a post-secondary program in Physical Education Kinesiology Personal Fitness Training or a related degree or diploma
  • Knowledge and experience in working with youth and adults
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to lead effectively and work within a team environment

Skills required for success:

  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build instant rapport with participants families and collaborators of all ages and backgrounds
  • Adaptability: Capacity to modify drills and activities on the fly to accommodate different learning paces and physical abilities
  • Class Management: Strong organizational skills to keep large groups focused safe and moving efficiently
  • Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( a culture of equity diversity reconciliation and inclusion

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Due to the nature of this work this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
  • Shift work requirements - Evening and weekend work is required as well as working at various City of Edmonton locations
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs expectations and emotional states

The Sport and Recreation Branch is looking for dynamic energetic professional and qualified individuals to instruct Learn to Play Sports Programs for youth and adults. If you are an instructor and want to share your passion for badminton pickleball volleyball soccer or basketball then this is the position for you! We are seeking motivated leaders who can foster an inclusive welcoming and active environment for all participants. By joining our team you will play a vital role in building healthy communities and connecting with residents through the joy of sport.

As a Sports Coach you will bring your leadership skills and athletic passion to our vibrant recreation this role you will be responsible for planning and delivering high-quality engaging and progressive sport instruction to diverse groups of youth and adults. You will serve as the face of our Learn to Play programs ensuring that every session is safe inclusive and tailored to varying skill levels. By creating a positive and encouraging environment you will motivate participants to build confidence learn new skills and develop a lifelong love for physical activity. Your dedication will directly contribute to building strong connections with community partners and engagement participants across the city.

What will you do

  • Instruct one or more of the following Learn to Play programs: Volleyball Basketball Pickleball Soccer and Badminton across City Recreation Centres
  • Deliver and lead group instruction in the time frame and manner that is determined by the class description
  • LeadE progressive challenging classes that adapt to varying levels of participant skills and abilities
  • Create a high-energy welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that motivates participants to improve on their progress throughout the class
  • Contribute to the Citys Learn To Play community by communicating in a positive and constructive manner
  • Provide substitute coverage for other instructors and attend professional development workshops and training as needed
  • Ensure gymnasium spaces are kept tidy orderly and safe before during and after classes
  • Accurately track program documentation including attendance participant evaluations and incident reports
  • Other related duties as required
