Job description

Job Description

The Addiction Treatment Centre is seeking 1 or 2 Family Physician(s) who thrives on patient centered care and who is not afraid to be innovative in its delivery.

At the Addiction Treatment Centre, we pride ourselves on providing a care environment inclusive for all and consistently seek out opportunities to enhance care for our population. The Addiction Treatment Centre houses a 25-bed Brief Detox Unit and 25-bed Social Detox Unit, along with Outpatient Addiction Counselling. The detox units provide both overnight care and longer-term withdrawal management (7–14 days) for a vulnerable population group. Many clients are not attached to family physicians and often present with an array of physical healthcare needs.

The population that uses this service has a high occurrence of communicable diseases, untreated health concerns, and many common physical health impacts from long-term substance use.

Common Long-Term and Episodic Care Needs

  • Assessing for appropriate adjunct withdrawal medication (e.g., hypertension medication for alcohol withdrawal)
  • Reviewing and renewing current scheduled medications
  • Determining organic vs. withdrawal symptom presentation
  • Prescribing antibiotics
  • Women’s health care
  • STBBI testing and treatment
  • Basic wound care assessment
  • Episodic infections
  • UTI testing and prescribing
  • Cellulitis management
  • Monitoring abnormal vital signs and baselines
  • Assessment and potential redirection to a higher level of care

Currently, two psychiatrists provide services on site. Office space will be provided to the successful applicant.

The SHA is dedicated to learning and is a partner in the growing educational needs of medical students and residents from the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan.

The University of Saskatchewan is a research-intensive institution with 26,000 students and 6,500 faculty and staff, and a strong reputation for innovation and excellence. The College of Medicine has an intake of 100 students per year with a commensurate number of positions for residency training and a number of distributed training sites in Regina and Saskatoon.

Job Qualifications

  • The candidate will hold certification from the or from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Individuals with fellowship training in pain medicine will deserve preference. Successful applicants will be eligible for a regular license to practice in Saskatchewan from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS).
  • The successful candidate must be licensed by CPSS to practice and prescribe initiation and maintenance opioid agonist therapy for persons with opioid dependence or be eligible and willing to obtain such licensure.
  • This individual should be a team player, be able to interact effectively with patients, colleagues, staff and management, and function well in a high volume environment with a commitment to provision of high-quality patient and family centered care.
  • All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; in accordance with immigration requirements, preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada.
  • The successful applicant is expected to participate in the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education programs of the Department of Family Medicine in the Regina Area.
  • The SHA requires a criminal record check (CRC) from every potential SHA team member. The CRC must be dated within the past six (6) months and be satisfactory to the SHA. A vulnerable sector check is required for individuals providing patient/resident/client care to vulnerable persons.
  • The SHA is committed to building a representative, diverse, inclusive and culturally responsive workforce. We are committed to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action. We work in the spirit of truth and reconciliation acknowledging Saskatchewan as the traditional territory of First Nations and Metis people.

The start date for this position is immediate. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
