Introduction & Key Role Objectives
WJ Groundwater is the leading construction dewatering and groundwater specialist in the UK with operations in Canada, the Middle East, Poland & the Philippines.
We have specialized plant and equipment that allows us to install custom dewatering and water treatment systems in various environments, including from within tunnels and shafts and from the surface.
The primary function of this position is to respond to invitations to tender, carry out basic design of dewatering schemes, and prepare, present, and negotiate quotations and proposals to clients.

Key Areas of Responsibility
Dewatering Designs and Cost Estimates :
- Identify and following up new business leads.
- Ensure enquiries are appropriately logged and responded to including organizing site and client visits.
- Review and evaluate tender documents, drawings, and engineering reports.
- Act as the key point of contact for clients throughout the design and tender process.
- Prepare tenders, proposals, and quotations. Select the appropriate methodology to be used, prepare design notes & calculations.
- Prepare supporting costing for quotations.
- Develop and implement strategies for following up quotations, maintaining contact with the client and tracking the progress of our proposals.
- Negotiate contracts, terms and conditions, methodologies, attendances.
- Review costs and sales performance and present data at management and sales meetings.
Change Orders and Commercial Matters :
- Prepare change orders and associated documentation associated with existing contracts.
- Follow up with clients to have change orders approved in a timely manner.
- Provide oversight of monthly invoicing cycle and pushing approval and invoicing on both WJ and client side to get approved invoices submitted to client-by-client deadline.
- To be responsible for own health and safety and that of colleagues in accordance with current construction guidance and relevant national legislation for our activities.
The above is not exhaustive and you will be expected to undertake any other duties which may reasonably fall within the level of responsibility and competence.
Qualifications & Experience
A motivated and hardworking individual with good written and verbal communication skills is essential. Minimum 2 years’ experience within the construction industry in a similar role.
- A degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (i.e. Hydrogeology, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, etc.).
- A relentless enthusiasm and tenacity to pursue commercial opportunities.
- A firm understanding of Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Civil Engineering.
- The ability to plan and organize own workload.
- Understanding of business development and marketing strategies.
- Commercial awareness, ideally including knowledge of construction industry contracts.
- Competent user of Microsoft Word, Excel, and AutoCAD.
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills - the ability to communicate complicated and sometimes sensitive concepts is an essential requirement.
- Resourcefulness, initiative, and the ability to work unsupervised.
- Experience with pumping equipment and water treatment is considered an asset.
Working Conditions
This role is primarily office-based at our Toronto office but requires occasional site visits for client meetings and walkovers.
Standard working hours are from 8 : 00 AM to 5 : 00 PM, Monday to Friday. Occasional flexibility in working hours may be required.
