Asset Manager – Fleet Operations & Maintenance

Overview

We are supporting a specialist trucking and transport services business in the appointment of an Asset Manager to take ownership of fleet performance, maintenance strategy, and lifecycle management across a heavy vehicle operation.

This role sits at the intersection of fleet operations and engineering, with accountability for asset availability, reliability, compliance, and cost control across a large commercial vehicle fleet.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Operations & Asset Performance

Full ownership of fleet asset performance, availability, and utilisation across the operation
Work closely with Operations and Transport teams to ensure vehicles are fit-for-purpose and aligned to operational demand
Monitor KPIs around uptime, breakdowns, roadside events, and vehicle utilisation
Support fleet planning, replacement programmes, and capacity growth initiatives

Maintenance & Reliability

Lead fleet maintenance strategy across preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance

Oversee workshop performance (in-house and third-party), including planning, scheduling, and quality control

Reduce unplanned downtime through reliability improvements and root cause analysis

Drive continuous improvement in maintenance practices, cost efficiency, and asset life

Compliance & Safety

Ensure fleet compliance with all relevant transport, safety, and regulatory requirements

Maintain standards around inspections, servicing, defect management, and documentation

Partner with HSE and Compliance teams to support audits and regulatory inspections

Asset Lifecycle & Cost Control

Manage asset lifecycle from acquisition through to disposal

Input into capital planning, fleet renewal, and specification decisions

Track and control maintenance spend, total cost of ownership, and asset ROI

Use data and fleet systems to support decision-making and performance reporting

Stakeholder & Team Collaboration

Act as the key interface between Fleet, Maintenance, Operations, and external service providers

Support and develop maintenance and fleet teams through clear standards and expectations

Provide clear reporting and insight to senior leadership on fleet performance and risk

Experience & Background

Proven experience in fleet, asset, or maintenance management within a trucking, haulage, or transport environment

Strong understanding of heavy vehicle maintenance, workshops, and fleet operations

Experience managing large commercial vehicle fleets (HGV / heavy trucks)

Track record of improving fleet reliability, availability, and maintenance performance

Comfortable working in a hands-on, operationally focused environment

Skills & Attributes

Strong operational mindset with an engineering / maintenance bias

Data-driven, with the ability to analyse fleet performance and costs

Practical problem-solver with experience reducing downtime and failures

Confident communicator across operations, maintenance, and leadership teams

Able to balance short-term operational demands with long-term asset strategy
