Your role

Radio-Canada Gaspésie/Magdalen Islands is seeking a Senior Manager, Content Development and Production, Regional Programming, who will work closely with and under the supervision of the Senior Director, Québec, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie-les-îles. This position is based in Matane.

In this role, you will provide daily guidance to teams per management directions, ensuring compliance with Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You must have extensive journalism experience, keen news sense and superior editorial judgment to be able to oversee the production of news content for TV, radio and digital. Consequently, in-depth knowledge of all our platforms is essential to fulfil this function.

Your creativity and knowledge of current news reporting trends will also enable you to generate original, innovative story ideas to evolve programs and content across our TV, radio and digital platforms.

Lastly, you must bring confident, positive leadership and strong interpersonal skills to maintain a harmonious and respectful workplace.

Key responsibilities:

Editorial

  • Communicate overall strategic objectives, as well as more specific objectives related to News and Current Affairs, editorial practices, digital platforms, impact journalism and continuous news. Develop an action plan for achieving those objectives and follow up with teams.

  • Constantly monitor the work of reporters and lineup editors to ensure alignment with the editorial vision.

  • Provide teams with guidance on questions about story choices/angles, resources, field deployments, staff assignments, etc.

  • Support, guide, engage and motivate news teams to generate and develop relevant feature series for audiences.

  • Ensure optimal reach for multiplatform content.

  • Become a legal expert for regional reporters, liaising with Legal Services as required.

  • Attend daily story meetings.

  • Review TV newscasts, items and other news programming with a critical eye to provide teams with feedback and ensure quality control.

  • Help prepare election coverage plans and other special projects.

Management

  • Participate in the hiring process for new employees.

  • Participate in the performance management process for staff and suggest ways to improve performance.

  • Coach reporters and lineup editors on a daily basis and be able to establish career development plans.

  • Supervise new hires and interns, and support the smooth operation of teams on a daily basis.

  • Help schedule annual leave by staff (in consultation with the leadership team).

  • Manage and approve schedules.

  • Actively participate in management meetings.

  • Sit on various local, regional and national committees upon request and perform any other task assigned by management.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field.

  • Ten (10) years’ journalism experience.

  • Experience working in a Radio-Canada newsroom a highly desirable asset.

  • Superior editorial judgment and thorough understanding of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Excellent knowledge of current events in Gaspésie/Magdalen Islands and Eastern Quebec regions, as well as a good contact network.

  • Superior knowledge of journalistic processes, newsgathering methods as well as production of stories, programs and content for TV, radio and digital platforms.

  • Knowledge of the media and communications industry.

  • Significant team management experience (planning, organizing, directing and scheduling).

  • Bold, agile and creative mind to develop innovative solutions, evaluate workflows and create new processes.

  • Knowledge of effective management and change-management techniques.

  • Strong leadership skills to engage and inspire creative, self-motivated teams.

  • Proven track record in developing employees and providing constructive feedback.

  • Ability to deal with confidential matters.

  • Positive attitude and solutions-focused leadership.

  • Highly developed interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.

  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple developing stories.

  • Ability to work independently and anticipate events.

  • Superior French-language skills (language of work).

  • Intermediate oral, writing and reading proficiency in English.

  • You will be required to be on call to respond to after-hours emergencies.
