Job description

IEM is the largest independent full-line manufacturer of electrical distribution and control systems in North America. The Company has developed one of the most sophisticated electrical product manufacturing systems in the world and has cultivated partnerships with leading component suppliers resulting in optimal solutions to customer problems. IEM has offices in California, Florida, Canada and Belgium.

PURPOSE OF POSITION :

The Wiring Designer is responsible for translating electrical schematics into detailed, point‐to‐point wiring diagrams and control panel layouts for production staff. This role ensures that every connection in our switchgear assemblies is accurately depicted, checked, and delivered on time. The Wiring Designer will use AutoCAD—leveraging in‐house tool palettes and custom blocks—to produce clear point to point wiring diagrams that meet company drafting standards and support efficient manufacturing.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Interpret electrical schematics and produce point‐to‐point wiring diagrams utilizing AutoCAD along with in‐house palettes and custom blocks.
  • Develop control panel layouts indicating locations of devices, DIN‐rail, shipping split connectors, terminal blocks, wireways and other control panel mounted components.
  • Perform self‐checks on all wiring diagrams to verify every conductor, terminal, and connector matches the original schematic.
  • Participate in peer reviews to catch and correct any discrepancies before releasing drawings to production.
  • Update drawings promptly when Design engineering update the electrical schematics, ensuring production always works from the latest data.
  • Communicate with production staff to address red‐lines and clarify any questions regarding wiring diagrams.
  • Verify that diagrams function correctly on the shop floor—visually inspect panels as needed to confirm accuracy and identify potential build issues.
  • Escalate any critical discrepancies that cannot be resolved through the design engineering team.
  • Follow up regularly with Electrical Engineers to clarify ambiguous schematic details or resolve missing information.
  • Provide feedback on design for manufacturability concerns—highlighting complex wiring routes, crowded terminal strips, or space constraints.
  • Participate in team meetings to share lessons learned, discuss common error sources, and suggest process enhancements.
  • Conduct periodic visits to multiple plant locations (up to 2–3 times per year) to conduct in-person reviews of in-process panels and support production teams.

COMPETENCIES :

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar CAD program.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use in‐house tool palettes and custom blocks.
  • Solid understanding of the wiring for industrial control components (contactors, relays, PLCs, terminal blocks, etc.).
  • Keen eye for catching common wiring mistakes such as mismatched wire numbers, mislabeled terminals, or missing connections before release to production.
  • Manage multiple drawing packages concurrently while tracking due dates and change history.
  • Clear, concise verbal and written communication—particularly when clarifying design intent with engineers or relaying issues to production teams.
  • Ability to follow up with production, ensuring red-lines are resolved without creating production delays.
  • Proactively identify potential build issues (e.g., conflicting wire routes, overcrowded cabinets) and propose feasible alternatives.
  • Willingness to learn new in-house tools, workflows, and drafting conventions.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with evolving project requirements.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience interpreting electrical drawings—such as point-to-point wiring diagrams or electrical schematics—for production, testing, or design.
  • Experience in panel-shop or industrial control drafting environments; direct switchgear-specific experience is a plus but not required.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Exposure to document control systems or ECO / EO tracking databases is beneficial.
