Ambrose University (Calgary, Alberta) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant / Associate Professor position in Music, starting August 2025. Reporting to the Dean of Arts and Science and working collaboratively with the Chair of Ambrose Arts and other Arts faculty, the individual has shared responsibilities for developing and executing a robust Music program vision while successfully maintaining individual teaching, committee, and research loads.
INFORMATION ABOUT AMBROSE ARTS AND THE MUSIC PROGRAM
Ambrose Arts exists as a department within the Faculty of Arts and Science as a home for degree programs, minors, diplomas, and elective credit offerings in the visual and performing arts at Ambrose University. Ambrose Arts works to internally elevate awareness of the Arts while fulfilling the external cultural aims of the university in Calgary and the world. Interdisciplinary interaction is of high value within the department.
Ambrose Arts produces an annual performance season featuring student, faculty, alumni, and guest artists in music, theatre, and dance, both on and off campus.
Music students enroll in one of three degree offerings : Bachelor of Music (BMus) or Bachelor of Arts in Music (3-year concentration or 4-year major). A Music minor is also offered.
Music degrees feature study in history, theory, applied music, aural training, and additional courses specific to the student’s career and educational direction.
Music ensembles include Choir, Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Jazz Combo. Ensembles and soloists offer a variety of performances within the Ambrose Arts season (October to April) and participate in other university and community events. Ensembles often feature the involvement of community musicians, reflecting the strong emphasis on collaborative work within Ambrose Arts.
Music graduates fill positions in churches, private music teaching, performing organizations, and music-related organizations, or continue their education in graduate and post-baccalaureate professional (e.g. Education) programs.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The primary area of responsibility will be in Music Theory. The Music program offers a 4-year Bachelor of Music and 3- and 4-year Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Music with a tradition in choral, vocal, piano, and jazz music. The successful applicant will complement our current expertise in Choral Music and Musicology by teaching elective courses in a secondary music area such as Applied Music (Instrument), Composition, Jazz Studies, Technology / Production, and / or Worship Arts.
Duties include :
- Preparing and teaching Music courses primarily in Music Theory sequence and Aural Skills.
- Ongoing research, publication, and / or professional practice.
- Regular committee work at departmental and university levels.
- Academic advising and support for students involved in Ambrose productions and work-integrated learning opportunities.
- Periodic involvement in student recruitment, curriculum development, and other department initiatives.
Depending on experience and skill set, the potential exists for an administrative / leadership role in the Ambrose Arts department.
